Which treats will they work for?
« on: August 19, 2011, 08:40:40 PM »
I have tried various treats for my two and found that many work for a while but yet to find the high value treat to beat all others!!

What do other people use? Particularly for those recall from distraction times or when your cocker needs persuading to do what you want not what they want!! We are revising recall training currrently but today went back to the long line as my treats weren't even worth a second glance which then got me thinking about posting this question for any suggestions.

I tend to change their treats every few days.  I use Fish4Dogs treats, chicken, homemade treats or just their kibble.

Thanks for your replies everyone.

Frankfurters were the treat of choice today but not good enough for Lord Pebble it seems!!!

Keep the ideas coming.

I have 2 who will accept any treat and 2 who are not food driven at all. Liver bread is probably the most likely to get a response.

On the non food option, Jasper is happy just to have a stick and whilst perhaps it isn' t considered a safe toy, at least it is readily available if I need him doing a perfect heel work.  He loves his food too though!

Home made sardine bread (smellier than tuna bread) or cocktail sausages. I buy a pack of 40 pre-cooked cocktail sausages cheaply from somewhere like Tesco or Sainsbury and freeze them in 10s. I know they're very unhealthy, but I chop each sausage into about 6 pieces, so the boys don't get too much.

I don't think Sonny's ever met a treat he didn't love; we use dried liver for regular training and roast chicken for recall, the chicken is his favourite but he loves it so much he can't concentrate on anything else :005:

Pilchard cake cut into small cubes.

Mash tin of pilchards with a fork, add 1 egg, plain flour to make into a dough, flatten onto a dinner plate, microwave for 5 mins.  Cool and cut into 1 cm cubes.

Have done cocktail sausages as well, cut each sausage into quarters lengthways then chop again into tiny treats.

Edam cheese is good too, but it upsets Tia's tummy a bit so don't use it any more.

Have also bought a pack of fresh chicken chunks (the ones you buy for sandwiches) and they went down well too.
