Teaching distance sit
« on: November 04, 2011, 06:01:58 PM »
I'm working with Fraser on a distance sit command (getting him to sit while he's quite far out from me). I read the previous thread and have been throwing a toy and then when he goes after it and has made the turn to come back, I say sit in a loud voice and click and treat when he sits. So far he will sit only after he's most of the way back to me or part way back. I'm clicking and treating to make sure he understands that he's supposed to sit even though he hasn't come all the way back as he usually does. How do I get him to sit sooner (i.e. as soon as he hears the sit and before he runs a ways back to me.) I think there's learning interference from other training to bring things back to me. I need to isolate the instant sit on command. Any suggestions?

There are some suggestions on this thread http://www.cockersonline.co.uk/discuss/index.php?topic=77135.0

When I teach the stop whistle I use the 'gundog' method I've described on that thread; Rodaidh and Caoimhe both stop like they've hit a brick wall the instant they hear the whistle no matter where they are or what's going on around them.

Ahh, that's what I need. Must be more than one thread on the topic as I didn't see all your detail about how to do it. Thanks.
