Fish in tomato sauce, do you give dogs the sauce too?
« on: August 25, 2012, 11:05:34 AM »
Hi All, I've been giving my boys some sardines in tomato sauce every other day. I haven't given them all the sauce though as I wasn't sure if I should. Is it ok for them to have all the tomato sauce please?

Thanks, Jacqui  :D

Mine have sardines or pilchards in tomato sauce as a full meal once a week and have a bit of the tomato sauce but not all. The sauce has salt in it and tomatoes are very acidic, so not good for teeth. I may be worrying too much about that but William doesn't have very good teeth (don't know why) and will be having a couple extracted very soon, so I try not to give him things that might weaken his teeth further.

Same as Elaine here - has sardines/pilchards once a week and some of the sauce... I wouldn't want to give them too much of the sauce too regularly...

I'm glad I haven't given them all of it now  ;) I've just lifted the fish out and popped them in the bowls with whatever sauce has coated them and no more. My boys have them as a topper on their food 3 times a week and love them  :luv:

Mine love sardines in tomato sauce.  They share a tin as a treat a couple of times a month and I share all the sauce between them.  I don't think it will do any harm as it is a rare treat for them.  They spend ages licking the bowls afterwards.

Mine have sardines in tomato sauce or tuna with every meal but I share a tin between the 2 of them and it does two meals - so one tin a day between them. I give them all the sauce and mix it up with their dry food if it's sardines - if it's tuna I drain the tin first. Bit worried now that they may be getting too much salt - off to do some research on dogs and salt now....

Coco has a whole tin in tomato sauce - she has all of it with a raw egg on top as a complete meal - but she only has it about once a week  ;)

I used to give Pearl sardines in olive oil until the lady from the lawn care people suggested putting a bit of tomato puree into her food to help stop the burnt patches on the lawn.  Not sure if its moving her onto sardines in tomato sauce [once or twice a fortnight] or being spayed but the lawn is looking better ;)
