ear washes!!!
« on: July 10, 2015, 08:35:24 PM »
orin had a grass seed go in his ear earlier in the week which he had to take a trip to the vets with today and it turns out it has burst his ear drum.  she has given me antibiotics and an ear wash in which I am supposed to flood his ear with this stuff which is to put natural bacteria back in his ear.  the issue is I have just done it for the first time and he HATES it and it seems to have made him 10 times work.  he hates ear drops at the best of times but to flood an ear which has a burst ear drum seems very distressing.  I have a burst ear drum and I know I woukldnt like it.

I am inclined to stop using this and just carry on with the tablets.

anyone else had ear wash??

Seems a bit odd to put ear drops in an ear with a burst drum, and I would imagine very painful for Orin, unless they have a pain relief effect to ease the ear, but it doesn't sound that way.

Hope you can find something to help him, poor little chap  :luv:

Right, I've just been hunting through my emails looking for the treatment that my girl Brodie was given from the specialist after both her eardrums were burst. It was a few years back, so I'm having to rely on the emails rather than my (awful) memory. I hope it all makes sense!

The email of our first appointment makes no mention of ear wash that I can see - she was on a tonne load of painkillers and antibiotics (hers was caused by infection). The second appointment she was prescribed the ear wash she's been on ever since: Trizchlor (with 2mls Dexamethasone added to stop infection getting hold again). It mentions easiotic ear drops (her usual ear drops), and from the way it is written, she had been getting that since her first appointment. The ear wash she was to get three times a week, in order to keep the ear canal clean and give the ear drum a chance to heal.

I can't remember her being in any more pain than she had been during this time, but considering this was all caused by an extreme infection she'd had a few months beforehand, she was probably already in quite considerable discomfort. Plus the painkillers probably helped ;). I was told she had a fifty/fifty chance of them regrowing, and thankfully both did.

Really hope that makes sense, bottom line is she was given an ear wash, in order to keep the ear canal clean. Really hope Orin has a swift recovery xx

Thanks we have persevered and he will let me wipe all inside his ear with ear wash on cotton wool and then I can put a good squirt of it in his ear and rub it gently so it is squelchy.  He is having his antibiotics too and I am giving him pain killers before bed.  lets hope it works.  the smell has gone and it looks less red but he sometimes sits or walks with his head tilted a bit.  fingers crossed.

Hi  Is that dog aspirin you are giving Orin. You have to be really careful with human painkillers. Dogs metabolise things differently and too big a dose is toxic, you can also give them stomach ulcers http://www.willows.uk.net/specialist-services/pet-health-information/anaesthesia/can-i-give-human-painkillers-to-my-pet

Milo lost his eardrums, and went deaf. I used an earwash every other day for about five years, along with a substance to coat the ear canal as it was no longer smooth. He tolerated it well, I think it made himfeel more comfortable once he got used to it. His ears had to be flushed out under anaesthetic after he went deaf, but I was meticulous with the cleaner and didn,t have any more problems.
