Went for the 10 week 2nd jab and...
« on: July 29, 2015, 09:10:49 AM »
Went up for our 10 week jab and the vet checked the paperwork that was issued from the 1st jabs from the breeder and said the jabs they do were not compatible? So ended up giving her jab 1 again and I have to return in 2 weeks for the booster. On reflection when I left the clinic I felt a little angry that we werent given the option to take her to the previous vets to finish the course there as they are only an Hr away.

Does this sound unusual? The more I thought about it after the more annoyed I was. also the amount of insurance paperwork that seems to be rammed down your neck at the vets, are they on a commision for refererals or something? We had 5 weeks free from the breeder so I do not want to sign up to anything yet until I do some research, will save the insurance for another post.

The injections course sounded odd to me though surely if you are immunised for say flu that jab is for flu and one brand to the next is comnpatible surely. Just felt like a money spinner to me on reflection. Meanwhile been taking coco out for journeys in the van and walking to the post office etc to get her socialised.

Otherwise all on track with the early stages of her life : )

Afraid as far as I know different brands of the jab are not the same. When I got Minstrel, luckily his breeder's vet used the same brand as mine, so I was able to get the 2nd done at my vet. However when I got Branston his breeder's vets and mine used different brands, and she lived quite a long way away, so as she was holding on to  Branston for an extra couple of weeks, anyway, he got his 2nd one done there.

Remembering Smudge 23/11/2006 - 3/8/2013, and Branston 30/8/14 - 28/10/22 both now at the Bridge.

I think I just felt a bit cross they didnt offer me the opportunity to travel to the original clinic to finish the course before we could even think about it the new jab had been done and now we have a further 2 weeks. Frustrating being unable to walk her yet. aiming to go to a beach on an outgoing tide later in the week but it seems to be taking forever to get out with her.

The vet should have told you what the options were, I would change vets

Pip had her first vaccination with her breeder that is different to the type our vets use. Luckily, they do keep a small amount of other brands purely for this purpose. So we have been able to out.....

This is the reason we never just give the first vaccination with our puppies- all too often, the new owners go to a vet who use a different manufacturer's vaccination protocol so the poor puppy gets the vaccination course started again which cannot be good for any young animal :-( In this case, it does seem a shame that the course could not have been completed at the breeder's vet as it was not far away - I would let your breeder know so that in future she/he can warn new owners what can happen if a new owner's vet uses a different manufacturer's vaccines.

What a shame, in reality you had the choice to walk out and go to the other vets but probably not the time to decide. As you say a quick check prior to getting into the consulting room could have saved you and your puppy from all this.

We had the same thing with Buster. We got him from Many Tears and they had given him his first jab. We took him to our vet with the MT papers and found we had to start again. North Yorks to South Wales being a bit of a trek to finish the jabs there! No harm done (except to wallets)

I think this is happening more and more. There have been previous posts here if I remember right. I agree with Elaine. I would rather that the breeder didnt do the first jab as, if the new owners vet uses a different one, not only do you have to start again but poor pup also has a needless extra injection. Years ago there was never a question of the breeder having any jabs done but now it seems more and more common.

when paying for the first jab, our vets price has always included the charge for the 2nd.
even when we got peggy (years ago) who had had her first jab, the 2nd had been paid for at her vets

Thankfully our Breeder would not vaccinate any of there litters for this reason.

The vet should have advised of your options, I paid £99 for vaccines for life so I no longer need to pay as long as Bea is insured.

We had this too a couple of years ago. I ended up ringing the manufacturer and finding a fairly local vet to get 2nd vac. done. Collecting another pup in a few weeks and will find out before hand which initial vaccine was used. Seems the poor little puppies are coming out of this the worst as they seem very small to be bombarded with an extra set of vaccinations.
