Title: William's had surgery -updated with results page 3
Post by: elaine.e on May 22, 2015, 11:13:03 AM
My poor boy is feeling every minute of his 11 years today after a general anaesthetic yesterday to remove a lump from his tongue, plus removal of one tooth, a scale and polish of the rest (which the vet said are in very good condition) and a needle aspiration of a lipoma. Not to mention having his anal glands emptied ph34r

I found the lump on his tongue a couple of weeks ago, by chance really, because I let him lick some peanut butter off my finger and felt a small bump. I decided to monitor it for a week or so before going to the vet because then I could tell the vet if it had grown or changed during that time. It didn't and I could see that it was small, pale, perfectly round and right in the middle of his tongue. The vet said that lumps on the tongue are very unusual, so although this didn't look particularly dangerous it would be best to have it removed and analysed asap.

So I booked him in, then the day before when grooming him I found a small regular shaped lump just behind his penis. I only noticed it because he was laid on his back while I groomed his tummy. I had a quick grope of Louis' nether regions to see if he had anything similar there :005: and realised he didn't. So I mentioned it to the vet when I took William in yesterday. The vet is confident it's a lipoma but if it became big it could cause problems because of it's location, so for now I'm going to monitor it.

Since William came home he's been eating well and has been peeing and pooping, but he's very restless and whiney. He slept on the bed with me last night so I could monitor him and because the only time the whining stops is when he's snuggled up next to me. I don't think it's pain. He has Meloxidyl for that. I think it's just the after effects of the anaesthetic affecting him even more than it used to when he was younger, poor boy :'(

The test results for the lump on his tongue will take about a week, so please can I have your positive thoughts for those, and also for William (and for my sanity) while he's feeling so sorry for himself. He's due back at the vet for a post-op. check tomorrow.morning

William was much improved yesterday afternoon but then had a bit of a rough night. I think it's just the after effects of the anaesthetic, but neither he nor I had a good night. I ended up getting up 5 times between midnight and 6.00 am to see if he needed to go in the garden, but most of the time he was just being restless without needing anything specific :-\.

However, he's still eating and drinking OK and the vet was delighted with him at his post op. check this morning, saying how well his tongue and gum are healing. He also said that he's removed a few lumps from dog's tongues over the years and they've all been harmless, so given the appearance of William's he's pretty sure it was too. So I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for the test results but not worrying as much as I was.

Right now William is looking very relaxed, alternating between sunbathing in the back garden and cooling off on the hall floor, so hopefully the anaesthetic after effects are wearing off.

Thanks for all your lovely comments :D

I always think of William as a very noble (and of course handsome :luv:) dog. I'm sorry he's been so restless since his anaesthetic, perhaps he'll be a lot more settled tonight.

All digits crossed that everything turns out to be harmless, hope our virtual  :bigarmhug: helps.

He seems to have found the perfect way of spending a sunny Saturday, bless him.

Hope William's getting back to his normal self after his op and anaesthetic and that there's good news once the results come back. It took Alfie a couple of days to get over his anaesthetic earlier this year and he whined & cried and was upstairs & downstairs the first night not knowing what to do with himself.

Hopefully the anaesthetic is mostly out of his system by now, and he is more settled. Lovely that he was able to sunbathe today, nice and relaxing, hope you both get a good rest tonight. X

Only just spotted this, poor William he has had a rough couple of days, I think they find the anaesthetic harder to get over when they are more 'mature' in years  ;)  when Ben had a couple of teeth removed at 11 he was a bit out of sorts for a couple of days, but then bounced back fine.

Keeping everything crossed the lump results all come back clear, it sounds positive from what the vet said. Sending the handsome William  :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: and hoping you both get a better nights sleep tonight.

We've had another bad night, this time with William having frequent bouts of diarrhoea. I think it must have been the Meloxidyl. He's had it before without problems, but never after an anaesthetic.

This morning he refused to eat at first, which really worried me. I think that was the first time ever (apart from some puppy fussiness). But luckily he brightened up about an hour later and had a little bit of scrambled egg and some pro-kolin. He hasn't had a diarrhoea attack for 7 hours now, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he's recovering.

Thank goodness for steam cleaners :005:. He made it to the garden every time but likes to come back in the house and scrape his bottom on the kitchen and hall floors :o

William is a lot better today, thank goodness. He hasn't needed any further pain relief so hasn't had any Meloxidyl since Saturday morning and with the help of some Prokolin, scrambled egg, chicken and rice his digestive system is now back to normal.

I got up once during last night because I thought I could hear him fidgeting about and wanting to go out, but it was just Louis moving from one of his beds to the other and re-organising his bedding :lol2:. Will was fast asleep, but I woke him up and put both of them outside for a couple of minutes just in case, but I needn't have bothered really.

This afternoon he's been helping (if that's the right word >:() in the garden and making a nuisance of himself by doing suicidal dashes in front of the lawnmower. It's nice to see that he's feeling lively again :luv:

The vet has phoned with the results about the lump on William's tongue. It was a type of cancer called a Plasmacytoma, which surprised me slightly because both vets that had seen it thought it more likely to be benign.

However, the good news is that the vet has told me not to worry because it was caught early so is very unlikely to have spread, and he removed a large enough area around it to be as sure as he can be that he removed all of it. He sounded very positive, and I know him well enough (and he knows me well enough) for me to be sure that when he told me not to worry he wasn't just saying that to reassure me.

I'd much rather it wasn't cancer of course, but I feel very lucky that I noticed it when I did and while it was still so small.

So I'm hoping that it's now gone for good and never returns. I'll check William's tongue every few weeks or so from now on, just to be on the safe side, and whenever I take him to the vet for anything I'll get them to check too.

Will is absolutely back to normal now, but very bored because I haven't been taking him on his daily New Forest walks because of the stitches in his tongue. He loves nothing more than picking up sticks and carrying them round, sometimes chewing them too, and I don't think that's wise while his tongue is still healing.

That is definitely a surprising result, I am glad you caught it when you did, and you do know your vet well enough to be confident in his opinion  Glad William is well enough to be bored, that is a good sign!!

That must have been a bit of a shock for your Elaine.  Great that they have caught it early and William is recovering well.  When does he have his stiches out or will they disolve.   What a worry these pooches are to us.

I think william is lucky he has such a great mum, you noticing it and taking him off to the vet so quickly really is a blessing. I hope his mouth heals quickly and he can get back to eating the forest stick by stick.

His stitches are dissolvable and are starting to dissolve now, 12 days after his surgery. I've started taking him back on his usual walks in the New Forest and so far he's been happy carrying a tennis ball, which seems to stop him wanting to chew sticks. He's back to his other favourite pastime of eating horse poo though :005:
