Cancer of the colon
« on: May 19, 2016, 12:45:55 PM »
Hi my nearly 12 year old cocker spaniel girl went in for what we thought was removal of a polyp in her colon but it has turned out to be a very large tumour and the vet was unable to remove it all, the vet feels it is malignant although we are still waiting for the path results to come back, previous to this she had been treated for colitis for some time. We are devastated at this news, has anyone had this diagnosis for their dog and what further treatment did they have if any

Firstly I'm so sorry for your news- I do know how shocked and helpless you feel. I've managed a dog with an inoperable kidney tumour and I guess you may be offered options. Palliative care is one. I don't know if others will be suitable in this case. But think over the possibilities. We took our boy away for a week to the seaside to try and get it straight in our minds! The only good thing I can offer is this: your dog doesn't know. Today is as nice as yesterday and I think that's a great thing we can do for any dog, carry the burden of anxiety and carry on giving them a normal life. Good luck. Take care of yourself too.

I'm also sending plenty of these  :bigarmhug:.   What an awful shock for you.  I think the advice from daw is excellent when you recover sufficiently from the initial shock of the diagnosis.   It's a horrible situation and I send lots of  :luv: to you and your beloved girl.

So sorry to hear this and understand how much a shock it is for you.

My 11 year old cocker Lady has just been diagnosed with cancer in her lungs and we're just dealing with this palliatively so she's on pain meds and making sure she makes the most of however short a life she has left as I don't think its fair to treat the cancer itself as it may rob her of the quality of life she currently has.

Oh dear, so sad to hear this. No experience with colan troubles  but have nursed a dog with  a inoperable  heart tumour until the time was right  :'(
fluid drains and tablets helped him along. His quality of life was good in every way  and it was him who "told me" he was ready to go on his next journey ( not before he had arranged his replacement  :luv:
