Is anybody else doing Formal Obedience Competitions/Shows?

Hi I just wanted to know if there is anyone else out there who competes in Formal Obedience with their cockers.  My Rosie and I are competing in Pre-Beginners and Beginners classes and also in the Kennel Club Special Pre-Beginners Stakes (KCSPBS).  We have achieved a couple rosettes for 4th & 3rd in Pre-Beginners and a 5th in KCSPBS. Rosie loves it both the competing and training (she doesn't know the difference between them I'm sure).  It has its challenges, namely the cocker nose but we are making loads of friends and enjoying great days out together.

Hi Shelley. I have been doing Rally with Maddie for about a year. We recently took part in a fun competition run by our dog training club and we scored 184. Encouraged by this, we are entering our first kennel Club competition in August. Bramble is also in a class too now and I may enter her as well. You are doing really well though, as the NOSE is a great hindrance at times. Well done!

we are in training at RallyO, taking a lot to get him focused, ( 15 months and entire still), his nose and eating cut dried grass :005:. had to  do a coarse off lead ;) this week, went ok
There is a RallyO at Dog Barn near Banbury next week 21st  anyone going?

RallyO is pretty similar to what Rosie and I am doing, pretty sure it takes the same sort of training.  Well done to you both! :D I wasn't sure if I was expecting too much from a cocker? 

Rosie hasn't eaten grass in the ring but she did eat rabbit poo, the steward didn't know if she should disqualify us for "bringing "treats" into the ring"  :005: although she  followed it with the comment "that technically they were already there",  a sense of humour is definitely required, we all had a giggle over it!

I used to do obedience with my cocker, Emily, and we had a second in novice. She was great (when in the mood!), and we had lots of fun, but she did get bored with the long heelwork sequences. So we swapped over to tracking and agility which she really enjoyed.  They're great fun little dogs who can turn their paw to most things so long as they're entertained. Enjoy whatever you do with yours (as you said - just keep your sense of humour close!)

There are a few people competing with cockers in obedience :D  I hope you and Rosie continue to enjoy as it's really good fun! 

Whatever people say you are not expecting too much with a cocker!  They are more than capable of holding their own: I know of 2 that have won out of beginners and won novice classes in the last few years and several that have been holding their own in novice or the beginner classes.

It is harder for small dogs on uneven ground than bigger dogs, especially if they work nice and tight to your leg, but it is possible...a very stylish and motivated Staffie down our way recently won class C!

Yes, a sense of humour is a must!

I compete in Beginners/Novice with my American Cocker. We got a third in Beginners yesterday at Halstead and there was another (English) cocker in the line up too.  :luv:

And we did it: Jesse won Beginners yesterday! So proud. So come on, cocker spaniel owners, give your dogs a go. Our cockers can do it!
