Shaking hands
« on: March 15, 2007, 07:03:40 PM »
My friend's labrador will give his paw on command, which is very sweet. I'd like Jarvis to do the same, but he doesn't seem to get it. I've been sitting him down, then raising his paw and saying "Hello" then treating, but he won't raise it for me...

I spent about four days lifting Maudies left paw saying left then treating her! On day five she got it! Then within another day she had learnt right for the right paw. It is a case of repetition! He will get it in the end!

It took me less than an hour with a clicker to train this - and Molo is not a bright boy  :005:

Hold a treat in your palm and cover it with your thumb with the rest of your fingers held flat - hold it in front of the dog at chest height and allow him to sniff the treat - release the treat the instant that he raises his paw to your hand - repeat.........he will soon suss out that he gets a reward for putting his paw on your hand and will do it again and again  ;) Eventually, he will do it when you put your hand in that position even without the treat, then you can add the command word  ;)

I taught Coco in about half an hour using a clicker.  She will now "give me your paw" and "other paw".  I have taught her other tricks with a clicker and it is a doddle - so much quicker ;)  I would probably not use "Hello" as the command as that is a word that he will hear a lot - might just confuse him.  Use a word just for that trick then he will know what it means  ;)

I did this method too - but had my hand on the floor at first (not that the end result is any different  ;) )  I use a clicker for training which is brill but you could do it without - just praise the second his paw touches your hand (and it will - just don't let him have the treat - he'll get  frustrated and bash your hand).  When he's used to doing this it's easy to say paw (or high five for some variation).  I think some have mastered the art of asking for the left or right paw too .......................... haven't tried that one yet  :D

Used your technique - took Jarvis under a minute!!! Needs a bit of refinement, but really sweet that he learns so quickly...
