As Many of you know we have had various problems with Maisy and her behaviour over the last few months. It had escalated and got out of control, things which I had not even posted on here such as seriously biting people, flying into rages over nothing and in the end badly biting Rob's face on Sunday for no reason (in fact she even displayed it to the vet on Tuesday who was very shocked). I cannot explain it all now, in fact I don't want to cause I don't want to remember her like that. We consulted our vet and a behaviourist, they advised that in their opinion Maisy had "Rage Syndrome" and would never ever be trained out of it and things would get worse. She was not re-homeable because of the extent of the problem and the best thing we could do for her would be to put her to sleep.
So yesterday at 09.40 after spending one last happy evening with Maisy we had her put to sleep, it was the hardest thing which I have ever had to do in my life and it feels as though my heart is broken. We stayed with her until the end. To see her yesterday morning chasing the birds around the field filled my heart with sadness, she looked at me as they were injecting her as if to plead with me not to do it. I wish so much I could have saved her, I wish it could have been different.
The thing is I know we are partly to blame, we brought a non KC registered dog, we did not see her mother or all the other things we should have done. I thought I was saving her from that place but in the end nothing could save her. I wish I had found this site earlier and researched better but I didn't and although I regret it, I do not regret one minute spent with my Maisy.
I know many of you will have opinions on what I have just said, the non KC, the Rage syndrome which some people do not think exists. Please do not debate it here and now, until you have seen it with your own eyes or been in my shoes it is hard to believe. but believe this, I would not have given up on her no matter how much training, time or money it would have taken, if it could have been done I would have done it. Some of you may say I deserve it for being so stupid in the first place, but I saw her and fell in love with her and maybe it was just meant to be that we would give her a happy four months of love, fun and care.
And so to my darling Maisy Moo. I am so so sorry. I miss every bone of you, we all do. our home is not the same without you and we will never ever forget you. I hope wherever you are now there are birdies to chase, dogs to play with and people to love. chicken for every meal and lots and lots of carpet to chew. you will never be forgotton by any of us and every tear I have cried has been worth it to have your love for the time we did, I wish you were still here with all my heart.
Thank you all for your help and advise over the last months. Good luck for the future and I hope you all have lots of happy time with your cockers.

Nina, I am so sorry to read this. Your experience mirrors the one we had with our first cocker,Millie. We had to have her PTS last year - very similar behaviour to Maisy.
I have to say, when I read your post about how Maisy was behaving, it sounded just like what Millie had been like at that age. Her biting was not a puppy bite either, it was a proper attack.
You have taken the most difficult decision any pet owner ever has to take. I still blame myself and miss my Millie every single day. I have not yet been able to look at a photo of her since she went. Dogs who have the history that Maisy had should not be rehomed. For me, rehoming Millie would have left her open to being punished for aggression that she had absolutely no control what so ever of.
If you're interested, and when you are feeling stronger, you can read about Millie's story in the looking for a puppy section of the forum.
One last thing. Please don't let your experience with Maisy put you off cockers for ever. They are fabulous little dogs. I learned so much from Millie. I now have 2 cockers who are true to breed in terms of temperament. They came from a good breeder and were well socialised.
Nina, I know in my heart that Millie just could not be saved, and I hope that, in time, you will appreciate that this was the case with Maisy too.
You, and your family, are in my thoughts.
Please PM me any time.
Take care.

Sorry to read this Nina, I know you did everything you could. I have leaky eyes just reading this, so it's impossible to imagine the heartache you are feeling.
Don't beat yourself up on this, you did everything you could. Remember the happy times. Like Jools said, don't let this put you off cockers they are wonderful little dogs and though you will never try and replace Maisy. Perhaps eventually you will find another little bundle that can start to fill the hole.
Thinking of you all,
Love Emily x

i know how you feel when i lost Badger I was inconsolable for weeks, and to this day i couldn't have another black and white dog i would be frightened of making comparisons. His picture still takes pride of place in my conservatory.
However do not EVEN FOR ONE MINUTE think that any of this is your fault, you found a puppy and fell in love that in my book isn't a crime. I know from the bottom of my heart that no one would of gone to the lengths that you have to try to help her. Try to remember all the love and happiness she had in her short life, which she probabaly wouldn't of got anywhere else and look forward to when you see her again because ALL dogs go to heaven. You had best be a good girl and make sure you go there too.
-
I'm truly sorry to hear about Maisy. :'(
You really tried to help her and it is none of your faults, she is now happy and having fun as she should be :luv:
I hope the pain of your sorrows heal quickly, but she will never be forgotten :-* :-*

Oh Nina ,
I'm so sorry, there's not much to say that hasn't already been said.
You saw a puppy, you gave her a home and all the love you could, but sometimes that isn't enough. You made the right decision, the only one in the circumstances.
No one is going to say you didn't try everthing humanly possible to sort her out, but sometimes the cards just dont fall in our favour :'(
Give yourself time to grieve and come to terms with what has happened - treasure the good times you had, i'm sure they were many.
Please feel free to PM me if you want a shoulder to cry on, or someone to shout out!
Take care - hugs to you and yours.
Ali

im so sorry to hear what you've been through its brought many tears to my eyes. :'(
-
Thank you everyone for your wonderful words.
Things have begun to get easier although I still find myself thinking she will be waiting at the door when I get in and waking in time to go for a walk and chase the birdies. I know it will get better but at the moment there is a massive hole. I had some wonderful cuddles at the weekend with some lovely cockers (you know who you are ;)) and we are going to get another.
Maisy for just six months old but had shown many signs of rage from around 4 months, when it went from puppy behaviour to quite vicious at times. I am looking into the breeder (if you can call her that ph34r) at the moment and I won't rest until I at least get some answers.

Hi Cazzie
Linda Ward is extremely knowledgeable on the subject - you can contact her via the following website.
http://www.cockerspanielrage.org.uk/ (http://www.cockerspanielrage.org.uk/)
I would also imagine that if you did a search on Linda Ward or Rage Syndrome in the search facility you'd find a fair bit :D :D :D

Ive read that thanks ;) Im wanting to know how early in a dogs life its diagnosed, as I feel Maisy was so young. As I have never heard of a dog with it before and being so upset at Maisy's story i would love to learn more as I think so many of us could learn from this

Many vets and behaviourists band the word rage around when a cocker comes in with a behavioural issue I'm afraid. I hear it often with cockers who suffer from bad cases of guarding/possessiveness --- which is a bad behavioural problem but not rage
-
I wonder if she could actually had a bad behavioural problem rather than rage --- many vets and behaviourists band the word rage around when a cocker comes in with a behavioural issue I'm afraid
I agree Penny, I think 'rage' is seen as an easy diagnosis for dogs which have behaviour issues, particularly cockers :-\

I agree Jan. It's probably best if this thread is closed as most members have now had a chance to pass on their condolences to Beanie.
