My blue roan Edward gets horrible fur balls matted with mud between his toes. I dry his feet everytime he comes in from outside but still these fur balls appear. My difficulty is that he won't let me cut them out. He gets really stressed. My vet gave him some knock-out pills to calm him down but they didn't work so as a last resort he had to have a general anathestic. I don't like this approach at all - does anyone else have the same problem? Is there a solution?

The best way to avoid this problem is to keep the hair well trimmed on the pads. If Edward is not used to you doing this you will have to go back to basics and get him used to having his feet trimmed. Use a firm surface with a piece of carpet or a thick towel. Even better if you can get someone to hold Edward. He is probably stressed because these hair balls can be very painful. I think it's important to keep feet and inside the ears trimmed between visits to the groomers for comfort.
If he has knots now you could try a good soak in the bath and massage some hair conditioner into the knots.
