26-09-09 Poor Poppy is just 6 months old and is our latest emergency case in need of very special and immediate care. This unlucky girl needs a liver shunt operation and needs it quickly or she won't last.
Poppy is a lovely girl, very affectionate and friends with everyone she meets. Please, we are asking for anyone with a good relationship with their vet and who can get a good, low quote for a liver shuntm operation to get in touch.  Sadly the operation that Poppy needs can run into the thousands and of course every penny is a struggle for us and has to come from somewhere.
Her owner's no longer wanted her and other large rescues turned Poppy down but we've taken her in and will do everything in our power to save her life, but we cannot without your help. Please help us find the help that this little angel needs and call us on 01269 843094 if you can help.

29-09-09 UPDATE
Poppy is very charming but very quiet for a pup. Walking her I see why - poor Poppy has damaged eyes, in fact I fear she is blind. Her liver enzymes are so high that I guess damage to the sensitive retinas has taken place. If only she had had this problem addressed early. It's hard and very sad to believe that someone with an extremely responsible job could ignore their responsibilities and cause this suffering.
This has been one of the most expensive weekends ever here and the most discouraging.  Dumped pups, neglected dogs and sadness and despair, thank goodness for those of you who agree to help. THANK YOU.

POPPY IS NOT READY FOR ADOPTION YET.

(Sorry if Poppy is on here twice, I'm sure I saw her on here but couldn't find the post to put on the MT update)

What kind of owners are they that can just ignore and then abandon their little pup. >:D I would do anything to get the money if my dog was ill.

Can an account be set up for us to donate towards her operation?

I was going to ask the same - I'm sure there are lots of us on here who would like to give something towards her costs, poor girl... how could they do that?

I saw this about Poppy this afternoon and got really upset. I followed the link re donations and was able to put in the description that I was donating for Poppy. I hope we are in time and can make a difference to this beautiful little girl and give her a chance which her owners didn't appear to want to do.

This is often a very difficult condition to detect so don't be too hard on the owner, dogs can live with a simple shunt for years which may be detected due to blood tests for something entirely different.

Occasionally there are animals with multiple shunts so the surgeon won't know how bad it is until all the tests are done.  ie Bile Acid tests, 12 hour starvation and 2 hours after food, then she will need a scan to find out how many shunts there are and even with surgery for a simple single shunt the prognosis may not be good.  No-one can be certain how the liver will react to the new blood supply and sometimes the dogs die some weeks later.

Shunts may be closed by placing a constrictor round the shunt and slowly closing it over a period of weeks, this may or may not work.  This is far from a simple procedure/operation and there may or may not be a good outcome even after surgery.

I know this is not what any of you want to hear but I am a realist and wanted you to be aware of the risks.  I had a pup (beagle) back in the 80's with liver shunt so I tend to keep an eye on latest developments.
Title: Re: Poppy at Many Tears
Post by: sallyd1 on September 28, 2009, 09:16:29 AM
I have just been reading all about this terrible condition and have copied and pasted a paragraph under the header surgery.

SURGERY
Most dogs are taken to surgery to have the shunt closed. Because the liver has not developed properly, many dogs cannot tolerate rapid closure of the shunt. Some veterinarians will partially occlude the vessel, leaving a small amount of shunting present. Many of these dogs still do well after surgery and about half are able to be taken off of medication and special diets within 6 months. In some, the clinical signs may recur, and a second surgery may be required to determine whether further closure can be attempted.

So there is a very good chance that Poppy if she gets the chance could get through this. Here's hoping and praying for her. x

Poppy had her scan yesterday,,,,Sadly this showed she has multiple internal and external liver shunts  :'(

Her prognosis is very poor and if surgery was carried out the vet said she still may well not make it.

The decision has been made not to operate. If she has the op it would have to be done now while she is well. This would be painful and stop her having the fun she is able to have at the moment and it could also kill her.

It has been decided she should live the life she has to the full and she is going to stay here until the time comes to let her go peacefully,,,,,

Thank you all for your support. I am so sorry it's not better news,,, :'(

Thanks all,,,,,

She is such a delight to have around and is well at the moment because her liver is currently coping,,,,

The main problem is her hunger. As she's on a high dose of steroids she is constantly starving, everything has had to be moved,,,,,

I'm going to get some cottage cheese tomorrow, this is a good protein treat she can have that her body can cope with,,,,

Thanks all for you kind words and support  :luv:

Poppy is a little princess who is impeccably behaved, loves cuddles and gives lovely kisses. She is generally quiet but does have moments of cheeky puppyness. My other dogs have accepted her readily and she is also enjoying her walks along the river.

The steroids do make her constantly hungry though, but the vet has allowed her the treat of a little cottage cheese and chicken and she is really enjoying that,,,

She is such a princess, it's heartbreaking,,,,

Poppy is doing really well at the moment,,,,She is putting weight on, is happy and energetic and is enjoying life  :luv:

She still has a slight cough, but copes well.

I'm trying so hard not to get attached but she is such a poppet it is difficult.

She doesn't know she is ill, or that she is going to lose her life to her illness. That makes me feel better.

I really try not to think about the person that bred her without any health checks on the parents, I try not to think about her owner who knew she was ill and did nothing, who let her sit a corner shaking with illness, and who said she didn't want her back when she was diagnosed as terminally ill. I try not to think about her body getting more and more poisoned every day. And I try not to think about what I will need to do for her when her little body can't cope anymore.

When she arrived I was so full of hope for a bright future. She was going to have her op and go off to a lovely forever home,,,

Poppy is now my dog in my heart. I love her as I do my own and I know she will now break all our hearts. But, I know she is very happy and is knowing love and cuddles for the first time in her short life, and that gives me great consolation,,,,,,It's weird, but I haven't cried for her because I know she feels well right now and will not be allowed to suffer,,,

Poppy continues to do well. She is looking very well right now and is still enjoying daily life. When she arrived my vets prognosis was 2 months,,,,Well, that time has now gone but Poppy is still well. She grows in confidence and becomes more playful each day. We have been told that when she becomes ill it will happen quickly, so I guess we are now just hoping and praying for Poppy to enjoy a Christmas with us, that would be just lovely! The tree is up and decorated and is as yet untouched by this cheeky young lady,,,,,
