It depends on what's making it run slow. If proggies are slow to load then defragging can help that. If Internet pages etc are slow then it suggests something more along the lines of adware has got in.

Defragging should be done regularyl as part of general good PC housekeeping (says she who hadn't done hers for over 12 months :D )

I'd do a full housekeeping run, run Spybot, Adaware, AV then defrag.

I do a disc cleanup everyday & scan with Spyferret, Spydoctor, Adaware, Noadware, Spybot etc  & AVG
I then defrag when I remember, about every 2 weeks  :)

I don't remember Adaware taking very long to download......does it not even start or just say it can't download?

What is a disc cleanup?

I feel so useless on here sometimes

You and me both Sheila    , we can console each other !

It says downloading and then nothing seems to happen - left it for about 15 mins and no change, same with adaware     Wonder if its because my PC is playing up and short on memory

It's good to know you aren't alone isn't it

It might be your computer then, I don't think I would have waited longer than 15 minutes either. I'd have assumed it wasn't going to work.
Hopefully someone with more knowledge will come along and be able to help. :)

Sue, are you on Dial-up???
The only time I have ever had problems downloading a file was while trying to fix a friends PC, it was because it was LOADED with spyware, trojans' and viruses, see if you can do an online virus scan like Panda's HERE (http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm) also try and download Microsoft Antispy (discussed in a previous thread).

To do a disc cleanup go to start - programs - accessories - system tools - disc cleanup, it will clean out all your temp files, recycle bin etc & should make your system run faster  :)

don't worry. All that matters is that you run the necessary stuff to get you clean then keep you clean and running smoothly ;)

If you're on BB you shouldn't have any prob's downloading the software. Try again from a different source ;)

Mmmm not sure why you shouldn't be able to download anything?? maybe you haven't got enough disk space left?? Have you got any programs loaded thta you NEVER really use? sometimes it's a good idea to remove things that you only use occasionaly, provided you have the discs of course in case you decide to re-install. It could also be a firewall problem, thats all I can think of I'm afraid.

:) Thanks Gilly - I turned off the screensaver (as Caroline suggested) and managed to get the de-frag to work yesterday and it does seem a bit quicker today.

 Have decided to be brave and have a go at putting some more memory in and see if that solves the problem.  Did the check on  Crucial, as you suggested Gilly, and have ordered it from them.

I read in one of the computer mags that you need an antistatic wrist strap when putting in the new memory - is this necessary?

;) Thanks for all your help Gilly x

I didn't have an antistatic wrist wrap, but I think you have to make sure your grounded, if that makes sense, saying that I made sure all power cables were unplugged from the wall first and everything was switched off.
When you get you memory I'll talk you through installing it  ;) It might be worth trying to find the manual that came with your PC, mine has a diagram on how to upgrade the memory so yours might to.

FAILED !!

Have had my memory for three days now and been putting off having a go     finally decided I had to be brave......... found out where I had to put the memory, pushed it into place but could'nt get the white clip on one side to hold, gave it another push and the clip broke !   Decided to switch on and see if it would work with just one clip holding it and all it did was give out loud bleeps

Think I need to call in the experts - oh well I tried !!!
