half kibble half raw....
« on: April 16, 2014, 11:01:41 AM »
So ... since my Fatty-Boo started
on her diet earlier this year we have
switched to half kibble/half raw which a certain
little doggy is thoroughly enjoying(she starts
crying for her tea on the way home) and now
the bag of kibble is running out I can't decide
whether to go completely raw or not.
I know no-one can decide for me but I'm dithering;
I'm lacking confidence to do the jump and I don't really know why.
Any comments gratefully received oh wise
CoLers.

Would it be a good idea to leave things the way they are half/half, then if for some reason you cannot get either, there will be one sort of food she is used to - until you can stock up with more supplies.

Go for it :D

I think changing to raw was the best thing I've ever done for my dogs. Make sure you feed a wide variety of meats, roughly 80% muscle meat (green tripe and heart are included in that category), 10% bone and 10% liver and kidney. You don't have to achieve that balance every meal, just roughly achieve it every week.

I keep a few trays of Nature Diet in the house as a standby if I forget to buy raw or get it out of the freezer. A friend of mine who raw feeds uses Burns for those occasions as that's what her dog was fed before and it was the only kibble she could tolerate.

Yes go for it.  I changed last year. If you are worried about DIY there are some good raw completes on the market. Natural Instinct and Nutriment.  Also some good raw feeding forums out there too.

If she's happy and healty on half and half and you're comfortable feeding this way then perhaps save yourself the stress of changing over completely if it worries you. There are good dry food products and bad just as there are good raw diets and incomplete ones.  So many differeng opinions on each.  I settle for what my dogs are heathly on and happy eating combined with what is convenient and  affordable for me.  There is no right or wrong IMO.

If she's half raw now and you are happy with it...why not? What reasons do you have for not going fully raw?

We are raw but I do have a bag of kibble/wet pouches incase I forget to get something out :)

Thank you everybody :D
Gave this a good coat of grey
matter last night and have decided...
go completely raw and if it becomes
a problem move back to half and half.
I guess it's overcoming the habit of a
lifetime of feeding kibble and trying
to be more organised than I normally am.
Going to give it a whirl and see how we go ;)

This might help http://rawstartexplained.webs.com/. I also belong to BARF Uk Chat forum. Lot of experienced raw feeders on there. The Honeys Real Dog food have a book that is worth a read too.  Also Nick Thompson has seminars on raw feeding, worth looking out for.

I have 2 Tupperware food containers, after his dinner, both boxes are then filed to defrost for the next day.

I buy from DAF but I made a 'menu' just so  that he doesn't get too much bone or none bone meals together (and to keep track of what I have so it all needs ordering at the same time again)

I've been feeding Mollie raw for 5 days now - she loves it - jumping up sniffing and going back to bowl to lick it clean again.  I am still feeding her gravy bones as her lunch, and I do have a tray of her old food/kibble - just in case I need it for emergency reasons.  Apart from that she is eating raw both meals and thoroughly enjoying it.
