Drinking
« on: June 28, 2008, 10:53:46 AM »
Vera is a monkey when it comes to drinking water.

She just does not seem to drink enough! When she does go for a drink its like she going for a world record each time!

Our concern is that she is fed on Royal Canin which as we all know is a dry food, so she isn't getting much moisture out of that.

When the hotter weather comes, she says optimistically, we still have the same problem.

I can't remember our other Cocker having drink problems, in fact he was the opposite!

Any suggestions and does anyone else have the same problem.

its most likely because of the amount of dry kibble she is having.   :005:

If you feed a raw diet, they dont drink nearly as much, as they get a lot of moisture from the diet.  :D

As long as you have got fresh water down all day for her then i wouldnt worry as its there if she needs it.She must be having all that she needs.
Ive always got water down for my lot, in the kitchen and in the bathroom but they often turn thier noses at that and rather go outside to thier other bowls that usually have rain water in them and they love this!!

Hi
If you are still worried could you not add water to half of her kibble?

You could give her ice cubes if you are worried. Eric loves playing with them and it gets water down them too

If you want to see how much she has, fill a jug just for topping up her bowl  for a few days. I think I read that they need the equivalent amount of water to the weight of the dry food, plus whatever else they want. Just watch the puddles.

One of our lurchers hardly ever drinks... in fact he NEVER drinks! It is so bad with him that I am adding a mug of water to a mug of food just to get some fluid into him!

When he suddenly started to drink from the bowl, I knew something was wrong and he was indeed diagnosed with kidney disease.

I wouldn't worry if she is happy and healthy, though I would probably add a bit of water to the dry kibble food.

Both of mine are on Royal Canin.

Alfie loves his water, although most of it is dribbled on the floor - always know where he is!!  Follow the water!
But honey, she is not so !!!

So maybe an element of RC and the Dry food, however they get a splash of Gravy, but Its strange that both fed the same yet both drink differently

Kali doesn't drink much but when Holly started drinking more than usual it turned out to be diabetes.  The vet told me (and mine are on kibble) that anything over 1.5 litres was to be investigated. :-\
