Posting offsite smileys

I hope that this isnt a stupid question, but how do you post smilies from offsite.
I posted a little avatar, by uploading it to my computer and using the box in my profile.

How do some of you get the little smilies etc with your signatures?
Do I have to upload the image to my machine, but then what do I do?
