OH just found a cocker stray... HELP!
« on: February 27, 2010, 06:21:41 PM »
OH has been working on his chopper most of the day, and when he took it out for the final ride, he spotted a cocker pup on the side of the road. She was chewing on a decaying roadkill rat!  He stopped the next passing car, as he was on the chopper and brought her straight home. She ate for ages, poor thing. In the morning we'll start the advertising and calling around to see if she has an owner looking for her. She is so skinny- she must have been missing for a week at least. Very friendly little thing. She is very scared of bailey though who just wants to play with her, and hump her. She wants nothing to do with him and snaps at him. At the moment, she is in the kitchen and bailey is in the rest of the house. Is this right or should i let them interact? If nobody claims her we are going to keep her- how do we get them to be civil to each other? Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated.

Have you contacted Doglost?
And a trip to vet to check for chip?
Sorry, not able to help with best way forward for socialising, I'd be tempted to let her settle first before Bailey plays with her if she is nervous  :-\

Don't get too attached just yet - just in case!!
Do you have a crate you could use for her to give her somewhere safe and quiet?  She must be very scared and confused.
Be careful she doesn't eat too much - if she has been starving for a while, it may upset her tummy to feed her too much too soon.....little and often is best.
Good luck!

Jenna is in S Africa but there may be an equivalent  ;)  Have you checked for a chip??  Did she have a collar on?  Was she far from houses?  If she was a long way from habitation it is possible she has been dumped I guess :'(

Poor little thing - she must be very confused.  A crate sounds like a good idea or a quiet space for her where she can feel safe   :-\  And small meals until you are sure she can take it.

I would leave it to her decide if she wants to approach Bailey - she is probably very scared at the moment  :-\

Will contact the local vets in the morning, and then if no luck will go to the internet cafe (my internet on my pc chose today of all days to play up!) to post on all the lost and found websites for the area. Not getting too attached yet... Keep thinking of her owners worrying about her- she's such a darling. Again, she must have been out for a while as she is so thin and her ears are all matted. Have taken the food away now- thanks for that!

No collar or anything to identify her. Phoned the vet and he said to bring her in in the morning. She was on quite a desolate road near a construction site.

I'm just glad she doesn't have to sleep out in the cold tonight... and she doesn't have to eat rats either. Yuck!

Might be an idea to worm her  ;)

So pleased she is safe now with you  :luv:

I would give her lots of space from Bailey until she has been given a clean bill of health   like others have said lots of regular small meals to stop her getting a tummy upset and plenty of fresh water  :luv:

let us know how she gets on   :luv:

Agree with the advise you have been given....
Let her find her feet with Bailey in her own time (she must be sooo scared at the minute, bless her) and food little and often.... and I'm sure the vets will sort out worming etc.  :luv:

Well done you and your OH for taking her in!!  :D

Bless her, how old do you think she is? Just wondering if she could even be a pup from a stray mother and there could be more of them wondering around somewhere???

Well done for taking her in, hope you find a loving owner for her... or she just happens to be a good second dog  ;) ;)

don't have a clue how old she is... Not younger than 3 months probably- she is about half the size of bailey height wise but is tiny in build. It's hard to tell as she is very thin... And not sure if she is pure cocker or cross. Dilyn has gone out to check if there are any other pups in the area.
