Which Slicker Brush
« on: June 07, 2011, 09:37:28 AM »
It had only been 8 weeks since Darwin was last professional groomed.  I've been brushing and combing him as mush as possible yet his coat was very matted , especially chest and legs. He spent a lot of time spent in the sea at Easter, so he would have been rubbed dry before he went back in the car, so maybe this is why his coat was so matted.  Now he has a short cut, which hes's enjoying. But I'm using this as an opportunity to go back to basics to try and make sure he's coat doesn't get in such a state again. He loves being combed and brushed yet he hates slicker brushes.  I've got one that has very fine pins. So I normally have to use his puppy one which is more of a brush than a slicker.  I've got several combs (narrow teeth, wide and a rake) and may get one with rotating teeth.  But can someone recommend a slicker brush

Morgan has a fine, silky coat and he finds a standard slicker too uncomfortable and scratchy. The one I use is a gentle one with plastic pins which have little rounded tips, I think it's a Mikki one that I just bought at Pets@Home.

I also use Groomer's Detangler spray on occasions if he's starting  to get a bit knotty which he easily does if I don't groom him daily.

"so he would have been rubbed dry"

Try sqeezing his coat with a towel instead of rubbing, it stops the matts forming

I keep bob in a full coat.... he also loves the water
if you use the Groomer's Detangler spray on his coat it works very well you can get it from pets@home
i found that  sqeezing the coat helps a lot rather than rubbing it as LynneB said
dose he wear a harness as this can make him matt...
you could get him a Equafleece to put on him when he is wet in the car i have the Dog Suit for Bob

i do find the slicker brush is the best thing to use ... the one i have a # 1 all system small slicker they do lots of brushes on here have a look

I use one of these on Sonny http://www.petplanet.co.uk/product.asp?dept_id=28&pf_id=52985&co=fr I got mine from Jollyes, I'm pretty sure P@H stock them too, it's quite good at getting out tangles and he doesn't object to me using it, I've tried it on my hand it's definitely not scratchy like most slickers. I use a comb for tangly bits in his feathers.

Thanks.

He does have a harness, but used very rarely.  I sure he was so matted from being rubbed dry after being on the beach, as he's never normally as bad as he was.  I'm blaming my husband !!  I have a look at the Groomers Detanlger Spray and the have been looking at the Equalfleeces and I'm planning on get one for the autumn/winter.  He won't be back on the beech until the autumn any way because of the summer dog bans

I've got a slicker similar to the one you use curly-locks, which he likes, but he hates the fine slickers.

Just wanted to say thanks, it's worked.

Since the start of June, I've been using a new slicker brush, and one of those combs with the teeth that move around a bit and also a Groomers spray.  We went to the groomers on Friday and his coat wasn't matted at all .  We always have a short cocker cut which works for us and she shapes him really nicely, but this time I can start to see if it works trying to grow a slightly longer skirt.

Now I just need to buy and Equalfleece.
