Believe the dog, he knows more than you.

Guess we have all done it, not believed the dog.
I used to own a big thickset liver worker named Bob, he would go anywhere!

The thickest cover to get a runner.
Swim the River Trent for a duck.

if it needed flushing, Bob was there
if the labs could not pick it Bob was there

so we are out one day on an estate, we have just had lunch which did include some liquid refreshments. the shoot captn decides to wake us all up by doing the worst walk through/drive on the estate. a mass of brambles, swamp, reed, all the nasty smelly stuff you just love.

off we went Bob flushes a goodfew birds and made some retrieves. not sure where he got the retrieves from as the bush was so thick.

at the end of the walk through was one real big monster of a bramble bush. Bob stooped, he would not go in.
Whats up with him?
Are you getting lazy!
there was something inthere as he was stood on the point but the little b***** would not go in.
So i told him wisit
he looked at me almost to say "really"
WISIT a bit stronger
Hes still looking at me with the "really"
WISIT!!!!!!!!!! getting a little annoyed now

OK he says ready for the flush............in he went

Up stands a deer about 5foot tall with small antlers, its one of the cross breeds so is about the size of a cow, having been flushed it bolts directly towards me.........i step out of the way and look round to see it bowling over one of the guns.

look back to see Bobs face with the look of "told you so"

Did he tell you that you could retrieve it yourself?  :lol2:

 :lol2:

I have one that questions my thought processes too - I sent him off in one direction one day and he threw me this look of disgust and went in the completely opposite direction....and beautifully flushed a pair of pheasants  ;)

Sounds like Bob flushed a muntjac -  they are tough little things.  We were doing a drive through maize cover last season and one flew out and collided with one of the beaters who was thrown onto his back and winded  :shades: He couldn't move for 5 minutes (and he is one hefty beater  :lol2: )

Bob sounds like he was a fantastic little dog  :luv:

Bob sounds like exactly the type of working Cocker you want :shades: :D  Tilly is very like that when working, she knows what she's doing and isn't afraid to let me know when she thinks I'm sending her in the wrong direction.

I don't think we have any muntjac up here but on one of the estate shoots in November a big roe stag came bounding out of a copse at one end of the beating line and came charging towards the middle of the line where Rodaidh and I were, thankfully it veered off and cleared a fence into more woods. Rodaidh was about 6 feet in front of me and I'd stopped him so he'd just stood there staring at the deer and as it disappeared he looked back at me and his eyes were like saucers... although a few seconds beforehand I'm sure mine had been the same :lol2:

What a clever dog  :luv:

We've got quite a few Muntjac by us and a pair in the woods I walk in most days but they are tiny little things so this one sounds like something else if it's 5ft tall  ;)

The Deer are cross bred Roe so are large.
Not sure of the full history on them but its something to do with the estate the shoot is on, they don’t farm the cross breeds but do the others.
The gun was not in too good a shape after the collision.

Jacks like this, if I send him in somewhere and he looks at me like im mad 99% of time hes right there is nothing in there. I trust his judgment now  :luv:

I tested him by sending Brie in anywhere he was reluctant to go to see if she would find anything, that girl will hunt anywhere, anything, anytime wether she thinks there is something there or not  :005:

Great story - what a shock!

your dog definately knew best - esp it it were a muntjac.  They have 2 tusks that they use in defence and can easily get on the underside of the dogs belly and cause an awful lot of damage.
