We would love to offer a home to a Cocker , preferably under 4 yrs.I work part time, my husband works shifts ,we are at home for at least 5 out of 7 days. Dog walker help organized,as well as being able to come home at lunch time for the odd day that we are not here.Just missing ours so much, lost him in November. One daughter 12 yrs, mature attitude. Hopefully there is one out there for us!

I think Blackjack is a working cocker so would be suitable for very active families (not for the feint hearted)

Sorry to hear of your loss. We lost our Barley last September and were devastated, so I know what you must be going through. I found writing on COL helped me, there are so many lovely people out there and most know exactly what you are experiencing.
I have found two rescue dogs through Dogpagesforum. The gorgeous Cagney, posted as an orange roan cocker cross, but isn't, (he may be a Brittany Spaniel, or, possibly a SpringerXRetriever) came to us in November and last weekend we picked up the dashing Charlie, a 2 and 1/2 year old blue roan cocker. What a joy to have a cocker back in our home.
My advice to you is never give up hope, keep looking, every day if possible and believe in fate, if it's meant to be it will happen. I never thought I stood a chance with Charlie, but like a jigsaw, it all fell into place. The same with Cagney, I was pipped at the post, then a phonecall out of the blue and he was mine.
Good luck with your search, I am sure you will find your forever friend soon.

I was at the Mayhew last week. Blackjack is a working cocker and needs a home either in a rural setting, or with a very active family. He is not suitable with young children but he can live with teenagers and other dogs. This is the info I was given about him, I almost asked to sneak a peek but I was too busy with my mum (she was picking up her second rescue dog from there at the time).

Good luck in your search. I was looking for a companion for Bess for a couple of months, then Dillon came along. I adopted him last weekend & I can't imagine life without him now. I can only repeat what others have said about looking - when the right one comes along it will be meant to happen. Try DogPages too

Just looked at Blackjack's photo & he doesn't look like a Working Cocker to me (too much coat for a start!). He looks just like a lot of the pet blue roan Cockers I trim that have come from pet breeders as opposed to show breeders. Oh well, hope he finds a new home soon whether he's a Working Cocker or not

As Blackjacks already being discussed here, I've moved the link to his photo:

definitely doesnt look like a working cocker to me either
Again, either call on 020 8969 0178 or email on info@mayhewanimalhome.org for further details.

He looks like a blue roan in need of a trim to me.

Here's more info on Blackjack for anyone who may be interested, sourced by Luvlylady (aka Miss Dolittle ):
I’m a 19month old Blue Roan Cocker Spaniel. I came to the home because I was destructive when left on my own; I get lonely easily and would prefer to go to a home with another dog. I have had lots of training since I’ve been here and have improved a great deal, but I am still a handful at times. I need a home with no children or cats

A big thankyou to everyone, for your replies and kind words.
I too went to visit Blackjack; he is a lovily little chap who has had a hard time , but the behaviourist at the Mayhew has worked wonders with him(she took him home for 3 weeks) According to her, he is definitely a working cocker and would require at least two hours exercise a day (preferably off lead). She said he should be OK with older children. is highly intelligent and would be good at agility.
After lots of family debates, we finally decided that we couldn't commit to that much exercise. It was a hard decision, but the right one I think. I just hope that it is not too long before he finds the right home. He really is beautiful.

Good luck with your continued search, and I'm sure Blackjack will find someone (or should that be the other way round!) soon :D
ps based on that photo, I STIL find it quite hard to believe he's a working cocker

Me too - he could be part Working Cocker & part show-type Cocker as some commercial breeders are blending the 2 types for reasons best known to them but he's not 100% Working Cocker. I always thought mental stimulation was more important with a Working Cocker than the amount of physical exercise but never mind  Not that 2 hours a day is excessive - our adults get that much a day easily (not all at once though :))

I think that's the usual myth of working breeds in pet homes in general where people think they just need lots of exercise and that's it, which is why there are so many border collies and springers in rescues at the moment.

You're right that's why I was surprised to hear of a behaviourist emphasising the 2 hours exercise, though if that's spread out over a day it's not so much as it sounds & some of it could be spent playing games like fetch with a ball or hide & seek which would exercise mind & body. This chap just sounds like many young Cockers who have been in the wrong home & understimulated for too long - just hope this label of "working cocker" isn't putting off would-be owners as show-type Cockers can be just as demanding
-
Probably also why you find cockers aged between 5 and 18 months always in the free ads as well!
-
Sad but true Penny :( I rehomed a young bitch last year with many of the issues that Blackjack has & she is now happily rehomed with a normal, active family after I had worked with her for a few weeks - the original owner was not prepared for how lively & demanding a young Cocker could be plus had been frightened to ever let her off the lead
-
I just think that those runs arent big enough for two dogs to stay happy , i know mine would go mental if couped up in one of those all day . he just needs to spread his legs , i watched him on the cam quite a bit and he dosent look that lively, although the riping up the house could be a problem but then again the previous owners may have not taken him for walks or played like every young cocker loves. he just needs a bit of time dovted to him and some training im sure he will turn into an angel when he calms down :) i hope he finds his forever home soon :)
Blackjack's requirements from the behavourist :
He should have a home with another dog as he suffers from stress
Should have an indoor kennel
Should have at least two hours exercise, most of which should be free running
A home without children
A home without cats
Ideally someone around for most of the day
Must attend dog training classes
Should wear a head collar when on lead to help calm him down
Plenty of toys are a must
I think in an ideal world we would want a rural home for Blackjack, but being realistic and being in London, we may not get this, if above are followed it shouldn't be a problem.

That's right Maria she fostered him for a little while. I contacted Sue from the Mayhew (originally about advertising him on agility.net) who replied shortly after.

We are now the proud owners of a pup. I do feel slightly guilty owning up to this, but I did find it very difficult looking at all these rescue dogs, and either someone beating me to it or them not being suitable. So Dylan (popular name for dogs at the moment, but it does suit him)is now a member of our family.. His mum was orange and white his dad gold, so he is mostly gold with a few white splodges and a spotty nose. - very pretty. I have never had two dogs before but it is something I am considering. Lots of questions though, What age should Dylan be ideally before we consider resuming our search for a rescue cocker? There seem to be lots of you out there with two, three or even four! I would welcome some advice. Many thanks
-
Congratulations on your new pup. There are always seem to be so many people after the cockers when they come up for rehoming, which is good. You should enjoy your pup for at least 18months before you decide to add to your doggie family. The theory is that you have one well trained dog before you take on another. Some well trained dogs (ahem! I'll mention no names  ) take a step back in their training when a new pup arrives   . I'm sure we'll get there though.
Have fun with your new addition - pictures soon please :D
-
Thanks for the advice . The pictures of your two are great, Cooper looks very much like our previous cocker Marcus. How long did it take Morgan to adjust to the new pup and how was he/she on first introduction :?:
I'll try some pics , might take me a while as I don't know how.
-
I've just added two pics of Dylan to the rogues gallery, puppy section. First car journey and newly arrived 9weeks old.
-
Hi there
Morgan was great with Cooper from the very first day. For the first few days they kind of ignored eachother but by day 3 or 4 they were playing together and maing quite a racket with it  It is great fun having they both - very entertaining
Am off now to look at Dylan's photo :P
