Title: Help what feed do you use?
Post by: goughee on May 23, 2007, 08:38:12 PM
We started off on Beta puppy, but our Poppy doesn't seem to like it so we changed, to Pedigree puppy.

This has caused her to have a loose stool.

I have heard about JWB but have no idea what it stands for!  any suggestions please.

We would like a natural food if possible.

Thanks

Pedigree is one of the worst foods out there along with the dreaded Bakers! It is full of additives and colours so I'm not surprised your pup has an upset stomach. I'd get her off it asap if you can.

JWB is James Wellbeloved which is a good food but which some people won't use for ethical reasons as their parent company tests foods on permanently caged animals. Same goes for Iams/Eukanuba and anything made by Purina.

High quality and ethically produced complete foods include Burns, Arden Grange, Autarky and Nutro. Good natural wet foods are NatureDiet and Nature's Menu. All of these have puppy and adult varieties.

Once you decide on a good high quality food do persevere with it, if you chop and change her food every time she seems to go off it you will make a rod for your own back as you will end up with a very fussy and picky dog!  ;)

I have my three on Burns, turns out to be the best decision I've made regarding dog food.

When I got my golden female (now 4 years old) she was on pedigree/bakers and she was so hyperactive, and it wasn't until we swapped her over that we realised a VERY big change in her nature, revealing a calm gentle character.

Other than that there's also the BARF diet, if you'd rather. If you do a search you will find a lot of information.

Hi,
We have changed to Laughing Dog which comes in Tripe,Lamb, and Chicken, it is baked in an oven not like all the other foods which are extruded and then sprayed with oil to keep them. The dogs love it and it smells just like digestive biscuits.

I or rather wucey is with Burns chicken and brown rice. When I got her she was on warfcol chicken complete and her previous owners gave me a big bag of it. I intended to change to Burns anyway and when I did she started to have smaller and firmer stools and the horrendous smell calmed down a lot. It suits her and she seems to love it too.

Second time I have written this but its horses for courses some will suit some wont but I agree with Nicola that once you hae found a food stick with it. Even when changing you need to stick with something new for (it does say on the burns bag which I have just thrown away) but a few weeks at least to really see what suits. Some people say its best to give a range of foods on the theory that humans would not want the same thing everyday. However I say once you have a food that works well, dont change. I always use chicken and brown rice for meals and then a range of treats mostly biscuit based. (I dont count a raw hide chew as a treat as it takes weeks for her to get through even a little one :005:) That gives her variety and makes the treats extra treaty!!

She seems happy enough.

I did not know that about JWB, I am surprised. I have bought there treats before crackjacks and another I cant remember the name off but not actually food.

I also like Burns as they only sell through local stores or direct to your door and support the small stores.

There are plenty of natural products now so avoid the ones with lots of additives as mentioned earlier. Chicken and rice is usally a good starting point but there are other varieties if that does not suit. I sue if you have a wander arond the stores and trawl the net you will be able to narrow down your list and come back here and members in the know can help you decide further.

Hope that was of help or interest or something! :D

We have just recently (past 2 days) changed Sam to Burns and I have noticed a big difference already.  He was on Eukanuba and his skin was really dry and flaky, but since changing to Burns his coat has become so much softer and is not flaking at all.  Maybe 2 days is too quick for this to happen but my OH, MIL and mum all agree that his coat is looking so much better.  An added bonus is that Sam loves it too!

I was very interested to see that website about all the compainies that test their stuff on cages animals, did not know this at all.  Definately no more Eukanuba for Sam!  >:D

Just reading through all these comments, which are terrifically helpful.  Burns sounds the way to go.  However, I haven't found it in my local Pets At Home.  Is it readily available at larger stores?

PAH don't stock Burns, it's usually available from smaller independent feed stockists or pet shops. Try googling Burns Pet Nutrition and there should be a contact number or a list of stockists on their website  ;)

Don't chane Bramble straight over though! LOL! Do it gradually!

We feed Arden Grange Premium and never had any problems with it, that's what the breeder fed chloe although we cut out the cheap Tripe wet food and water on recommendation from our trainer!

I am expecting a puppy later this summer and have been following this thread and investigating food.  I very much like the sound of John Burns set up.  However, although the staff in PAH were very helpful, they basically said everything under their own name brand was just as good.  They then went on to say, "but we don't know anything about Burns" - so how can they know theirs is just as good???!

Got home and googled Burns - brilliant website.  Rang them and they were incredibly helpful.  Even though I live in the middle of the Fens, with little or no amenities, they told me of a kennels less than 2 miles away that stocks it, or they (Burns) will deliver to me personally.  Very impressive policy and good business too!

It will definitely have my vote.

I dont think that anybody else here does but Maudie loves it and has the most amazing coat.

I did use this

But Maudie had really fishy breath because of the fish content. But it has an amazing effect on the skin and coat!

Arden Grange, Pro-plan and Royal Canine are all great.
Ours are fed on Pro-plan. ;)

Burns contains rice and oats (and some of their products contain potato and/or maize), but no wheat  ;) Arden Grange has rice and maize, Pro-Plan use rice, oats, wheat or maize in their various products and Royal Canin has rice or maize in........

O right, I was rushed in my reply so didn't get chance to look it up. Didn't mean anyting against Burns in my reply.
What I meant about the other foods is that the main ingredient is usually meat. Ours obviously like their meat! ;)

hi,
we`ve visited local supplier and he gave us some free samples & lots of leaflets with information about burns food, however i did end up buying a 15kg bag of chicken & rice for £34.99.we`ll gradually change bramble over to the burns food,he`s tried one feed tonight and he really did enjoy it.

it looks like he`ll be on 2 * 100 grams per day as he`s 12kg at the moment

just a shame our kids dont get the same concerns over what they eat  ;)

I buy Burns food straight from the website. Just type Burns and you will find it. Their delivery service is excellent and the advice line has been invaluable to me, a novice dog owner, as may I add have all you COLers! their range of treats is very good to. I find the training treats particullarly good for re- call probably because they smell ghastly! They are just slightly better in your pocket than bits of soggy sausage or cheese.

I have to say the staff at Burns are the most helpful I have ever come accross, they can't do enough.

What an amazing response! thank you all for your replies.

We have changed Poppy's feed to JWB it may have been a coincidence but the poor mite developed an allergic reaction over the bank holiday weekend, she was given an anti-histamine injection by the vet and seems to be recovering. Her face was all swollen and she could hardly open her eyes. We were really worried.

The Vet thinks that it was probably not the feed but I am watching closely. Has anyone else's baby had a reaction to JWB

Both my dogs were on JWB for a few months, and although they didn't have a severe reaction like you've decribed they both had poos a bit too squishy for my liking, and Lucy (my cavalier who has allergies) was very flaky. :-\ As far as i could figure out JWB only has "no added artificial colours/flavours preservatives"

I've now got them both on Autarky (which is a huge amount cheaper!) and they couldn't be better. :D Both really shiny, and Lucy's whole coat texture has changed, she's all soft and lovely now. :D Autarky is also completely free from artificial stuff.

If you want to avoid additives and chemicals, and consider animal welfare issues, then raw feeding is definitely one option - but the source of the meat is an important factor  :-\

Cheap supermarket meat tends to be intensively farmed - with the animals fed a processed, additive enriched diet, which builds up in their tissues and can still be present in the meat  :-\
Until I found a regular supplier of free-range, additive-free raw meat and bones, I opted to feed the Burns Organic variety of feed......as I felt it was more ethical than some of the raw meat I could buy :(

I dont want to say dont go to Burns (coz Im a Burns Fan!) but how long has Poppy been on JWB and how fast did you change her over to it. If Poppy was put onto JWB without it being gradually introduced then that could make her have a runny tummy or she may need more time to adjust her system to it. I think you said she was on two different puppy foods then JWB so may be the changes are causing the problem. She is a beautiful little dog by the way I just looked up the photos you added in another thread.  :luv:

She is a bundle of fun none the less.

Skinners do a range of Field and Trial foods for working dogs which as far as I know are pretty good although I don't use them myself, I prefer Autarky as it's holistic and more natural and after that would probably go for Chudley's Working Crunch or Performance. The Ruff and Ready is the Skinners 'pet dog' formula and I would think it's probably ok too.
