This explains cookies far better than I'm able to http://www.bbc.co.uk/webwise/guides/about-cookies

Do you have any antivirus software? I have Bullguard and run it once a week and one of the things it can do is get rid of cookies.

I use CCcleaner regularly to get rid of tracking cookies & other rubbish - it's brilliant and free (as long as you select the free download not the pro version). It also lets you save cookies you don't want to delete (like those needed to log in to COL :D)
