Carrots
« on: January 04, 2008, 09:42:48 PM »
Hi,
just wondered if you guys could tell me if carrots are ok for dogs, as Holly has developed a passion :luv: for them,
she is beside me in a flash if she sees me heading for the kitchen, I have chopped a few up as treats for the girls,  but now i'm worried  as someone said they were not good for dogs,( which I found rather strange as they are in tin dog food,)
both Holly and Honey are on Burns and love it.  I am trying to wean them off dog biscuits as treats so thought the carrots might be better for them, your thoughts and advice please.

I hope they're alright as Max gets one every morning.  He loves them.
I'm sure I read that they're actually beneficial in keeping their teeth clean too  ;)

Yes, I always have a supply of carrots for Coco and any visiting dogs - most of them seem to like them  :D  I guess you could overdo them but Coco tend to chew them and leave most of it on the floor - she probably only actually swallows about a quarter of it  ::)  I think pretty much any veg are OK except onions (incl leeks) and raw potatoes  ;)

i think Coco and Jarv have been comparing notes....i'm just about to remove the carefully gnawed bits of carrot from the carpet that have been oh so artfully arranged ph34r

they are great for treats, low fat, really really good for teething pups (straight out of the fridge, soothes their gums) ...but in moderation.

Try and keep her habit down to one or 2 max a day ;)

Yup - both mine love carrots and demand one every lunchtime! Call it 'carrot o'clock' in our house! We've even had to take to calling them orange sticks as they have learnt what carrot is. We must sound mad if anyone actually listens to us! :005:

I have a friend with a cocker, and when she prepares carrots for dinner, she always allows the peel to fall to the floor - well actually, the peel never hits the floor, Louie hoovers them up, midair!

Bracken isnt that bovvered with them tho, but she does get them in her veg mix... ::)

Ronald has carrots and apple every day - he helps himself when I'm feeding Samson (my horse)! ::)

He's been eating them for the whole 8 years we've had him and he is one of the fittest and healthiest dogs I've ever seen! :D

Laurië loves carrots too  :D and cauliflower and cucumber and tomatoes. And of course fruit is a favourite, but she does not get fruit every day because of all the sugar. I use it as training treats. Never heard anything bad about carrots. But we stay away from things that are really bad for dogs, like onion and grapes because it is dangerous for them to eat. And I am careful with cabbage, broccoli, potato and corn because I've heard it can be bad but I'm not really sure. Laurië's breeder gave fruit and vegetables to the dogs and they loved it, first time I came to visit the dogs were in the garden with apples and pears and carrots in their front paws, they looked like giant squirrels, so cute  :luv:
