Don't know what I would do with a nasty dog.
« on: October 24, 2010, 12:49:51 PM »
I went to the tops today with my three, and a little one we are looking after this week.   They were all  totally happy to run about, sniff, and interact when they met other dogs.

Then, I met a man with two dalmations on lead.................I wondered why they were on lead, so I began leading mine in another direction.  He immediately started to shout out that 'all cockers are nuisances...............they don't have a brain cell between them.'

I couldn't help but tell him that mine are at least able to be free................they are friendly, and wouldn't cause any harm.

We have to be able to take our dogs somewhere to run free..................why do these people with aggressive dogs, blame everyone else for their the behaviour of their dogs????

lets hope his dalmations bite his bum - misery guts >:D

Personally, i cannot image anything worse than having to walk a nasty dog - it would be so boring and stressful having the keep them on a lead.

His Dalmatians are probably aggressive because he has always kept them on the lead. I meet 2 Dalmatians when walking Bonnie and they are no problem at all, a bit of a run towards each other a sniff and go on their way. I could not own a nasty dog the stress would make what should be one of the most pleasurable things to do a nightmare.

my friend has a dalmation cross, and he is just a big soppy thing.  A bit on the nervous side but not an aggresive bone in his body - i dont know that they have a reputation for being nasty - that said, i didnt know that cockers had a reputation for being nuisances with no brain cells!"

I couldn't agree with you more.  Nothing at all against Dalmations...........we know a few delightful ones.  These, however, were very snarly and I think if they had been free, they would have attacked.  :luv:

All breeds are lovely in their own way aren't they?  I just feel that I don't know how I would cope if I had an aggressive dog.  I would feel so nervous if I couldn't trust its reaction to other dogs.  The man was very defensive................but, he didn't have to retort about spaniels being stupid, did he?

He might have a point there  ph34r :005:

We were walking ours a few weeks ago and they were happily running around and we met a couple of ramblers who said "wasps on strings - get a labrador"  How rude! The really annoying thing is when you come up with all the clever retorts an hour after the moment has passed  ::)

....sounds more like the owner was the agressive one & not the dogs  >:(  .... maybe he sould of been on a lead!
(were the dogs agressive Lily Freya? - it's unclear from your OP  ;)  )

sometimes feel quite sorry for the dogs being walked that are 'aggressive' ...... obviously they're not coping with something in their life & must be in a great deal of stress themselves  :'(

They were just snarling, as he was pulling them to try to get control.  To be honest, I had already begun walking in the other direction with my three, so i can't even say they were being a nuisance to his dogs.  I think he needed to blame mine, and hurl abuse at the breed because his were embarrassing him.

I agree with you that it is sometimes the owner rather than the dogs...........he was certainly not controlling them too well, and was getting more and more angry with them.

Got to say that I always ask 'why?'  There has to be something that is causing them to react this way without any provocation.

Just shows how ignorant some people are.  I would have asked them if they had ever seen a cocker working?  If they had, it might have took their breath away.  ;)

We have to be able to take our dogs somewhere to run free..................why do these people with aggressive dogs, blame everyone else for their the behaviour of their dogs????

The man sounds like an idiot and it may well be all his fault his dogs are like this.  But what would you do with your dog LF if it was aggressive?  PTS?  Many dogs are dog aggressive, I suppose mostly through under-socialisation - but many people (thank goodness) take these dogs on from rescue and work with them or manage them as best they can.  I met some people today who are brilliant Grade A dog owners - they currently have a doodle - but they were telling me their previous dog was a cocker they'd had from a pup till she was 13 and died of old age that had gone around biting the whole family at some point but they couldn't bear to put her to sleep.

I guess I'm just saying it's not all cut and dried.  We meet dogs that kick off and sometimes it's my dog that kicks off - I just try to think ahead and put her on the leash when necessary.

Thank you for that, I was feeling a little down at this thread ;). I was one of those people who had a dog with behavioural problems through fear aggression and I did my very best to handle him - which meant keeping him on a lead around other dogs and people. It's easy to judge but things are not always as clear as they seem. Barney was the love of my life despite all his problems :luv: :luv:. In saying that, the guy in the OP sounds like a right eejit >:D :005:

Yes he was............honestly!!

I can sympathise when you have a dog that has problems.............which is why I said, 'I don't know what I would do.'  I would certainly have to do my best by my dog as you clearly did Jenny B.  His aggression certainly wasn't helping his two dogs.
