Some of you will have read the thread by Shane in which she mentions about some one telling her daughter she doesn't have a real cocker....... http://www.cockersonline.co.uk/discuss/index.php?topic=33430.0
Cazzie mentioned doing a project that would show the differences between show cockers and working cockers.
I had a PM from Shane asking how to go about getting some info from us all, as I had suggested maybe starting a thread in her previous thread, where we could all give some information.
So here you go guys, this is your chance to show off all you know about Show cockers and Working cockers!
All info would be greatly apprecited by Shane for her daughters project ;)

Shane, pm me your address and I will send her down a Gun Dog Whistle ;)

It is believed that spaniels as a general type of dog were identified more than 2, 500 years ago, in Mediterranean lands.
The cocker spaniel may have got it's name from the job in which it was bred to do which was to flush wood cock.

Great idea but please be careful everyone and don't post copyrighted material from other websites or books without permission ;) As with photos, it's best to post links to content on other sites rather than just copy and paste the content directly here.
Thanks :D

Here are some websites that might be helpful:
http://www.sitf.com/dogs-month2007.asp (scroll down the page to see Field Trial Champion Sandy. She would not have been imported to the US or eliglble for her championship if she weren't pure bred! Also check out "Puppie", the little naked American cocker! :005:)

Am emailing shane (tracie) with some pics ;)

cockers were used in net hunting birds, they had to be small enough to get under the net without breaking it or losing the birds. There are some lovely old photos and paintings of how the hunting used to be carried out.
-
cockers were originally bred to flush wood cock out (the birds ) ;)

Working Cockers as Pets ;)

I was going to suggest the Felstead Gundogs site as well, it has loads of info, pretty much everything you'd need.
If you need any more photos give me a shout, I have almost two thousand photos of my 3 working cockers, various other working cockers and quite a few show types as well.

Only if you don't mind one breeder's personal opinions being presented as facts though ;) There are quite a few things on this page that could easily be disputed by anyone with a more objective point of view.

Yes sorry, that's very true but I found it helpfull, I think there are some good points though and everything should be read with a pinch of salt when it is a personal opinion, particularly on websites. These things, I feel, are a good starting point though.

Obviously I'm not suggesting that my groovy gang are perfect examples of show type cockers, but I've got these pics of George Linus and Harmy with Matts working cocker Dash

Harmy, George, Linus and Dash, are gorgeous cocker's. Dash looks so much like our Evie, the way he sits, alert and ready to go, as does our Evie when waiting for one of us to throw her a ball. Thank you for the pic's, we would like to include them in our project.
