ollie smell down below
« on: October 18, 2018, 12:06:07 PM »
Any advice on what to use.....ollie was clipped 3 weeks ago a now that slight smell of pee is drifting back, I have a couple of old face cloths that i keep with his things and have used diluted hiscrub then rinse - he does not seem to have any problems in the drainage area...just the strong smell is starting, wondering if Johnson sensitive baby wipes might help.

The hiscrub and face cloths does get him quite wet.  Mil suggested white vinegar diluted, ouch am sure that would sting

Granddaughter gets water based babywipes used on her,  but only for poo.
Have you noticed the colour of Ollies?s wee, in case it is very yellow and smellier.   Might need to drink more , dilute the wee and have a stronger flow!  Or like gentlemen of a certain age, have a bit of a dribble from an enlarged prostate!

I haven't noticed a dribble - but he is a monkey at not drinking.  Will keep an eye on him and look out for baby wipes just to try

If he doesn't drink much and is fed dry food he may not have enough moisture in his diet and could be producing very concentrated pee. Watch him when he pees and try to judge the colour. Ideally it should be pretty much colourless. The stronger the colour, the more concentrated it is and I don't think that's good for the kidneys. If it's a strong colour you might be best to take him and a pee sample to the vet, just to be on the safe side.

My oldie William, who's 14, is raw fed, so gets most of his moisture from his food, which is probably just as well because he never seems to drink much. I watch him when he pees and if it looks or smells strong I add some extra water to his raw meals for a couple of days. If his pee still looked or smelled strong after that I'd take him to the vet.

Adding my agree. Alternatives that have worked for us are adding a few drops of salmon oil or grate a little bit of cheese into his water (Hugo is particularly fond of parmesan  ;))

I use sensitive baby wipes for cleansing but i find they're never moist enough so I rinse them under the tap a bit as well.

Thanks for all the ideas. I have bought some sensitive baby wipes today, yesterday did the hisicrub and face cloth....only thing is it can get a bit soapy, stand him on garden table, helps when I have another pair of hands.  He is always a monkey at  drinking, when we are away it is always a mix of water and a drop of milk with a sprinkle on brown sugar in his own little flask....he laps it up a and OH refers to it as Mums milky special, otherwise it is a wee drop of tea or a splash of coffee in his dish that gets him to drink when we are out and about.  But at home I tend to refrain from this as his fresh water is always on hand.  Plus worry about him getting too used to what I add in case it harms him.  Elaine he loves cheese so the parmesan may help and could try the chicken stock too Jayne.......but are they a bit salty for him.

He seems great in himself OH said his pee smell strong but added it does, I will try to add to his drink or at least do the weak Milky special after his walk to make sure of his intake after his walk.  OH has said he will hold him if I fancy to try a trim on the under carriage...........we will see about that one......a steady hand me thinks.  But he would let me  :luv:

Yes, parmesan is very salty but it's such a strong smell to doggies that you only need a tiny sprinkle of it finely grated onto the water to attract them, it works with Hugo anyway.

please dont add shop bought chicken stock as it contains too much salt which will make the problem worse.  You could make your own with some chicken wings / thighs and water in a slow cooker.  Just cool and remove the bones and feed as a broth alongside his normal meal.

I agree with Pat. You could make your own in a slow cooker, or even just poach some chicken in water (no seasoning) in a saucepan and freeze in ice cube bags or trays so you can take one or two out to add to his water every day. Even a hint of chicken smell and flavour may encourage him to drink more.

I have tryed the cheese and he didn't go mad but he did have a good drink.

As for the chicken poaching....I do that for myself with chicken breast(diet) and poach in OXO low salt veg stock with a spring of parsley lemon juice and always, so shall omit the stock and see how that goes next time.

But the chicken pathway is a bit of a difficult one.....I have Chicken George living in my house along with tin Salmon Sammy - honestly he can be fast asleep in the lounge and next moment the cocker eyes as silently but deadly drilling into your space, this is usually at 6 am when making salmon sandwiches for OH (Ollie has the black skin and bits) then when the chicken in any form comes out so does Ollie.
There is only one thing a very stubborn cocker spaniel wants and it isn't the stock :005:

Yes, we have the same smelly problem.

We?ve just put it down to Darwin?s aim being completely off.  He does still try to cock his leg, but doesn?t fall over very often. :005:   He just wees on himself as he does it. He never seems sore.

We tried a range of things.  Human baby wipes don?t seem very effective, dog wipes are much better but very expensive. Dog deodorant type sprays help.  There an evening promise coat conditioner spray that quite nice. But Darwin hates them and if he could, he would run a mile when he seen the can/bottle

I hate to say it but I think Ollie quite likes it :005: it is far less  arduous than the teeth cleaning, the baby wipes are working well - I first use a tea tree wipe then the sensetive baby wipes as I worry about the stinging of the tea tree face wipes, I do have a lemon and lime spray that I can use.
I have to put my thinking cap on as there is a spray that is prescribed for this sort of thing in humans with inco bags, Ollie really isn't that bad. I just want to keep him clean.

For Darwin

Senset Skin Cleansing Foam - 300ml have a look at this it is used for humans :005: might help if you have a read up - Senset do wipes quite a few things....used in nursing, Ebay has the foam, otherwise it is from specialist suppliers
The idea is to stop the skin breaking down and it cleanses and moistures etc and is for very sensitive areas.
