Title: No bathing :0(
Post by: Surfing Spaniel on August 25, 2003, 08:41:17 AM
I was just reading the post about 'Shampoo'. When I went to the vet last week, she told me not to bath Dylan. She said once or twice a year was more than enough. He's 13 weeks old & Ive bathed him twice, well he had got wee all over him so he had to be done ::) I just wondered what everyones opinion was, & does it stop frontline working???

Hmm, don't think your vet knows a whole lot about Cocker coats ;) You should bath your pup as often as you think he needs it - inevitably there are times when he will get dirty & need a bath but if you leave it to only once or twice a year, you're going to have one smelly canine ;D Bathing won't stop Frontline working so you don't have to worry about that :)

Bathing is a regular in our house - there's no way I could leave it to 2 times a year!

Almost every walk Rigsby goes on he manages to find a ditch or pond filled with black stinking goo :o  I find the hose on a jet nozzle is a daily occurence and he really enjoys his baths as he has had so many - he lays down on his back with legs in the air while I shampoo him and then goes under the shower to rinse off!  The more often your dog has a bath the easier it will be to do it, and believe me with a cocker you will need to! ;D

Phoebe gets bathed every two to three weeks depending on the weather and whats she's been swimming in ::). She also goes to the groomers every couple of months.

She would be very whiffy if she was left to a couple of times a year.

It does help doing her often as she has settled into it quickly (no chasing a wet dog around the house - she even likes the hair dryer).

Millie gets smelly quite often. She probably has a bath at least once a month - more often if she finds something sticky and smelly whilst on a walk.
She actually hates the bath, she stands there crying  :'( , but as a consolation she loves the haidryer; she evens sits by me when I blow dry my own hair  ::)

There would be some very grubby show dogs if they were bathed twice a year :P
My Gold girl Bryony is bathed every week if we have a show ;) She spends a lot of time running around the garden and digging holes :o She also paddles in the water bowl ??? So you can imagine what she looks like between shows ::) Must post a pic some time ;D

Hiya
Thanx for all the replies, I'm so glad everyone has said ignore the vet & carry on bathing :) I don't think you can beat a fluffy puppy all nice & clean, & I reckon if you didnt bath him the house would start to smell a bit, never mind the dog. After all I watch House Doctor & she always has something to say if owners havent bathed the dogs :o Saying that though I reckon you walk in our house at the minute, & it smells of biological washing powder where I've been cleaning all those little accidents up  ::)

Vet obviously doesn't come across many cockers who roll in fox poo. Ruby was so disgusting tonight I was nearly sick trying to bath her. On average she gets bathed at least once a week depending on how much she's rolled in!

Yes, Lottie gets bathed frequently too even though she never goes swimming (avoids water like the plague ::)).  Having said that, she did have a paddle in the sea last week and a idp in some rock pools.  She came home very smelly and I couldn't wait to get her in the shower.

She's not keen on the shower either...loves running around after and also loves the hairdryer too ;D

Bathing won't stop Frontline working so you don't have to worry about that :)

My lot are bathed regularly too ::)
The only thing I'd like to add to Jane's sound advice is not to bath 48 hours either side of applying Frontline or any other topical flea treatment  ;D

Has anyone any tips to make bathtime a bit less traumatic for Harry?

He's now 13 weeks old and we gave him his first bath a couple of weeks ago, which he HATED >:( >:( >:( - struggling to escape and crying - we all ended up soaking!

I have been told that if I want him to get used to regular bathing, (which from reading this thread I imagine I will, especially with Autumn around the corner and plenty of mud to come!) then I should expose him to it frequently now to get him used to it!

Two horrible baths later - he now recognises the signs and tries to escape as soon as he sees a towel! We try to be calm and reassure without giving him the message that he's right to be scared but ITS NOT WORKING and when he gets a bit bigger it'll be really hard to keep him in the bath.

Do I have to just persevere, is the water temperature OK ?(tepid/warm), should I use the shower attachment or a jug (tried both with equally disastrous results) or something else???? ??? We are bathing him in the bath on a shower mat.

I know it's early days, but would like to know if anyone else's puppy has reacted like this and how they dealt with it!

Yes Michelle, you are not alone.  Lottie reacted much like this to begin with, she cried and struggled throughout her bath (which was done in the sink when she was tiny).

Persevere.  Lottie now goes in the bath and I use the shower on her and she is OK.  I can't say she enjoys it but she makes no fuss and is just happier once it's over ;)

I use tepid water, talk to her constantly (or sing ;D) and reassure her that she's being a good girl and give her a few kisses :D  I think using the shower is quicker and more effective than rinsing and therefore is over with much quicker ;)

Mary, Am glad someone else is just as mad. I tend to tell Ruby how beautiful she is throughout the whole process and just jabber on to her. Its amazing how well it works—cockers always seem to love compliments :D

Shower attachment works very well here as well—gets rid of soap quicker.

Only real problem I have is that Ruby gets too hyper running around afterwards (have to put puppy in pen so she doesn't bowl him over too many times and let her confidence spill over and go too far).

Both mine do the hyper thing too immediately after having a bath  ::)  ;D

ever since monty started cocking his leg he has needed more regular baths.......obviously the male ability NOT to aim straight extends to dogs too :-X ::) - after a bath - he has a loopy session - which has, during the summer, included rolling around in the boarders in the garden.....making him almost need another bath ::)

Yep....same here ::)  I carry her downstairs wrapped in a towel, close all doors (now restrict her to 2 rooms only ;)) and when the coast is clear I release her...she's like a greyhound out of a trap ::) ;D

Thats exactly what i do...but as usual she ALWAYS needs to go and do a wee and runs to the back door  :-X last night i let her out after her bath and the next door neighbour was bringing in his washing...Buttons flew outside like a nutter wee'd barking her head off...then pooed barking her head off and then ran around the garden at a million miles an hour...my neighbour just looked and went  :o :o
"It's perfectly normal behaviour"  i said  :-X ;D
Somehow don't think he believed me  ;)

I used to hate bathing my two but now it's not so bad.  The first time I bathed Candy was a joke!  The key for me is to be prepared and have everything I need BEFORE they get wet.  So the extension lead and hair drier is all set up with all the brushes, comb and extra towels on the table.  After I've taken them out of the bath, I have even more towels folded in the sink which I rest them on to dry them off some more without having to bend over in the bath (saves my back!) and then they're semi dry before going downstairs. (Does that make sense?)

Also I've found that the water needs to be quite warm.  I had it tepid originally but when I turned it up they seemed to relax more and stop squirming.  Singing worked with Candy but Georgia seemed slightly unnerved poor little thing!  ::)

I wouldn't say they enjoy it as such but it's certainly not as traumatic as it was at the beginning.

Gosh Loraine, I wish I was that organised...........bath time is a bit chaotic here. ::)

I bathed both Jimmy and Misty the other day and the sight of them tearing about together afterwards was hysterical, god knows what the neighbours thought was going on. My main problem with Jimmy is the tug of war with the towel after I've dried him.........a nice warm shower and then he seems to have a bit of love action in mind ! ::) ;D

The first time I bathed Misty was a real struggle, she seemed to think I'd had enough of her and was trying to drown her........she screeched like a seagull ! This time I sang to her and it seemed to do the trick. My tuneless rendition of You Lost That Loving Feeling left her in a stunned silence ! Looking something like this..... :o ! ;D

I was dreading bathing Molly - when she was a pup I used to put her in the sink in the utility room and there would be mud and water absoutely everywhere and I needed a bath after I had finished.  So putting her in even MORE water seemed a bit daunting.

However, I was really surprised as she acted really calm and she was fine.   :o   I put her in my shower and just used the shower head which she really liked!     :D

She even let me use the hairdryer on her which was a big achievement considering she runs away from it every morning.

I do like to see her all fluffy after her baths - her hair just bounces about like those Busbies on the guards at Buckingham palace  ;D ;D

Hi

Have just read through these posts and would agree with all that bathing a Cocker on a regular basis is a must!

Sophie will roll in Fox, Horse, Badger, Rabbit, or any other animals poo!!!! :-X

We live in the country surrounded by farm land so she has lots of opportunity to get herself in a mess and will never miss one ;D

She loves the hairdryer, but has a mad few minutes afterwards, tearing around the house rubbing herself on the carpets.  Guess she feels the need to get her old smell back.
