Wont Sstand When Grooming
« on: August 31, 2004, 04:40:31 PM »
 When we have Bailey groomed he wont stand at all, he gets really distressed by the shears and snaps at the groomer when she comes near him with them. So the poor groomer has to do him by hand as he doesn't seem to mind the scissors which takes her ages and you dont get the same smooth effect. Have you got any tips on getting him to stand for her and not being scared of the shears?  we have tried treats but he doesn't seem to want them :( . The groomer is very patient with him and feels he will grow out of it, however im worried she may not want to groom him anymore if he doesn't settle down  He's nearly 9 months now and it will be his 3rd time for grooming in a couple of weeks as his fur grows really fluffy quick, i would like to been able to surprise her by Bailey being good when she comes next time. please help any suggestions would be great :(

Hi Dianne

I know not everyone has the time, but have you thought about grooming him at home with coatking, scissors, thinners, etc?   :)

I just know for a fact that Morgan and Cooper would never let me near then with a set of clippers - if I switch the hairdryer on they both bolt    I've tried getting them used to it by leaving it on the floor to sniff and sitting with it switched on low but there's no way they are going to trust it not to bite!!!  :D

It sounds like Bailey is frightened of the noise or the sensation and if he only sees the clippers every 3 months or so while in an unfamiliar environment  there's no opportunity to show him that there's nothing to worry about.  Could the groomer come to your house to clip Bailey?  At least then he's only got one thing to unsettle him and it might be easier to overcome the fear of the clippers.

Sorry I can't think of anything else to try but I'm sure others (maybe those who clip their pups)  will have more ideas  :)  ;) .

:P thanks for the reply, the groomer does come to the house as i had heard such horror stories about parlours. Maybe your right i should try and do him myself, but wouldnt know where to start. Bailey is also afraid of the hairdryer, hoover anything what makes a funny noise even squeeky toys! I ve tried allsorts to get him used to them but he wont have it at all. Any suggestions on grooming? ;)

    well seeings as i,m a barber i just imagined jasper to be a customer  short back and sides sir!!he looks just how i like it,i hate to see them all clipped off, they look like dogs from another planet  the only thing i can,t get sorted is he has curly hair on his head,so i have to let it get longer so it lies down better,i love the tufty quiff on top,i did read on a thread ages ago that black males can,t be handsripped oops stripped,he does have very dense thick hair, and it gets really lugged if i don,t keep on top of it,i,m sure bailey bumpkins will be fine bring him to me i,ll give him a shampoo and set

As Shirley said the CoatKing is very good and would be much quicker than scissors and you would get a smooth effect. You could get one of these and let the groomer use it when she comes or buy a pair of clippers and try and get him used to them in between your groomer calling. A friend of mine did this with her Cocker who hated the clippers    and she did manage to get her to tolerate them so that when she brought her to me for her haircut she didn,t find it to traumatic as she was used to them at home  :)
