grooming with elastic band!
« on: July 22, 2010, 07:56:35 AM »
I have heard mentioned on heare about wrapping an elastic band around a comb. Does this get hairs out more easily? Do i just put it in and out of the comb prongs.

Yep weave it in and out of the prongs. I do every other prong and then comb through. You'll be surprised how much you get out.  ;)

Ive tried this with not much success. I wonder if its because Freyas coat is fairly short and the comb fairly deep? x

I use this method too on my two girl workers. They are both shedding at the moment and I get LOADS out.  :D
You have to keep taking the hair off the comb as it quickly builds up.  :005:
I much prefer this method to a furminator, groomit, coat king etc.
I find that with other methods they work but the new hair grows at funny angles  >:(
I just use a cheap wide toothed comb (purchased as a set at Poundland  ph34r) with a thick rubber band interlaced in the prongs.
It just takes the undercoat out and leaves the shiny top coat.  :D

Im the same. Lol.

Ive had a go with the furminator and its worked but I know its not the best long term option.

I cant see how it would work and Im not sure if you need to brush in a particular direction or with a particular technique and I cant find a clip on Utube. Maybe Im thinking about it too much

Hmm, if you just think about a normal metal toothed dog comb and then its got an average elastic band weaved in and out of each tooth and sort of pushed down to the 'top' so that you are still able to comb their fur normally. You then just comb the dog as you would usually in the direction of the coat. It really is as easy as it sounds and does a brilliant job. In just a few strokes the comb is full with Alf and it leaves his coat really silky. I would only use it on the body and parts of the legs though as it will pull at other places (use a normal slicker or comb everywhere else).

Hope that helped :D

Yep as easy as that.  ;) I do find sometimes using the comb at a slight angle gets more out, so that the elastic band is connecting with the coat better, so if you have had no luck with it maybe try this.  ;)

A coat king can actually cut the coat and this is the same principle as handstripping really as it grabs hold of the hair that's ready to come out and pulls. It's just you get more in one go than with just finger and thumb.  ;)
