Another good idea is to invest in a snood, then the ears are completely protected.
The one I have is a cotton 'tube' elasticated at both ends - dead simple. ;)
This site HERE (http://www.handsnpaws.com/product/PCMACCSNOOD) is an American one, but it shows you how to measure up, so you could even have a go at making your own.
