Spinal Disc Surgery
« on: April 14, 2015, 10:28:31 PM »
I rarely post on here but my gorgeous furbaby Maisie had to have emergency spinal surgery on a slipped/exploded disc just over 3 weeks ago.  She had previously shown no signs that there was anything wrong, she just suddenly went down with a yelp whilst running about on our walk.  She was up to that point very fit and active, and although she is progressing relatively well I wondered if anyone else on here has any experience of this type of injury, any advice to help us, and also any ideas on how to keep her amused whilst she is unable to get about as I think she's getting pretty bored now.  Thanks in advance.

Sorry I have no knowledge of disc or spinal surgery but want to send  :bigarmhug: for you and Maisie.  Every best wish for her recovery.

Aww thanks Andy   she's caused me a huge amount of worry the last three weeks, but is making a very slow but steady recovery.  It's so hard to see my gorgeous girlie unable to even stand on her own, let alone walk....she used to live life at 90 miles an hour!!!!  Heaven knows how she must be feeling....lots of positivity needed to help her get back to some sort of normality

Thankfully no experience of such an injury, but sending loads of positive vibes in the hope that your little one can be helped to recovery.

It must have been so frightening for you all.

Some  :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: for you all. Also I believe (from reading on here) that stuffed kongs are a good boredom buster.

my old girl Kizzy slipped and shattered her disc and had to have surgery, it was such a shock to see her after surgery and we had to teach her how to walk again. she made a brilliant recovery though and went on to live until she was nearly 14 . one tip i would give is to use a long scarf under her tummy to help her walk , it is more comfortable for her and saves on your back bending etc. good luck and i hope Maisie makes a speedy recovery  :luv: :luv:

Poor Maisie. which disc was it, do you know? Lyla had the same 4 years ago now. Hers was a L3/4 from what I recall. Her recovery is as fresh in my mind as the day she did it! It's a very hard road to recovery for them and for you! I agree with the scarf. The specialist nurse advised a towel but it's too bulky and inflexible. When I was advised the scarf, I rang the vets and told them and now they advise that for everyone else!

It's just time and patience. No rushing and it will all come right. Lyla does have some residual damage in so much as she tends to drag get back legs a little but a choice between that and paralysed? We will take draggy legs! You only notice it when she gets tired but that's just her and her experience. Other dogs never have any trouble.

Please if you haven't already, invest in a soft harness for her. It spreads the load on her back so no one disc is under pressure. I did raise Lylas bowl for the first few months, just to make it easier. Just make sure she doesn't do more than is good for her.

If I can help just message me. I'm not always on here but I will see it on my messages so can pop on. Good luck to Maisie!
