Sorry I haven't been active lately! I hope someone can give some insight into something for me.
My girl (now 1 year 4 months) went into heat for the second time at the beginning of April 2017. Her first heat was in October 2016 and she had a phantom pregnancy(produced milk etc). But she didn't really seem to suffer many problems like depression etc.
However after her heat in April I went away for 2 weeks vacation and left her with my partner and also had a dog walker come during the day so she wasn't left alone any longer than she would have been in the past. Actually I would guess she maybe got a bit more attention while I was away.
After coming back home she ran straight passed me while I came into the room and ran to the dog walker instead. I was a bit surprised by that! but i guess it was normal and she maybe felt a bit abandoned. The first week or two of being back home she would go and sit in her crate even if I was in the sitting room, she NEVER did this before and always wanted to be in the same room as me.
She would also go down stairs and sit in her crate while i'm upstairs, this is completely alien to me as she would never go to her crate unless i told her...
Anyway She eventually stopped doing this but there are other aspects of her behaviour.
I took her to the vet and he said she could be having another phantom pregnancy and if that's the case she is probably infertile
He also suggested that she could have some infection with her uterus / womb and he prescribed some antibiotics.
He emptied her glands at the same time and said they appeared quite watery indicating an infection there too.
It was the first time visiting this particular vet and i'm not 100% convinced , does it sound correct? I thought to have a phantom pregnancy she would produce milk like the first time in Oct 2016? She didn't produce any milk this time at all.
Her other behaviour changes are;
While out walking she will squat down to pee but nothing comes out , she doesn't do this at home or in the garden at home but will do it a LOT at the beach. I assume this is her trying to "scent" ? if so why? surely they only supposed to do this during heat....?
Another change is she does not like going near other dogs now and dogs she previously knew once they get to close she will bare teeth or growl. She was always well socialised with other dogs and would happily run around in circles chasing dogs playfully this has all but stopped and once a dog gets too close to her she will snarl. There was an incident when a Labrador she knew from a very young age and had regular contact with came near her, she went to nip him after the growling/baring teeth didn't give him the message.
Is there some health reason ? surely it can't be all down to me leaving for two weeks ?? I've been back for almost a month now!!
