Title: Missing Dew Claw
Post by: *Jay* on May 08, 2004, 10:57:56 AM
Ok, Dallas is 19 months old now and last night, I realised he has only one dew claw     I'm not a bad mum, honest     Anyway, it just got me to wondering why :?  Is it possible that only one grew :? or that the vet was half asleep when removing the dew claws and left one behind?

Iknow you should get dew claws removed when there pups by the vet .
but ive never seen what they look like ? do they grow differntley thicker? and why do they remove them ?

The vet may not have removed all of the dew claw and it has simply grown back, or just forgot to do it.

The dew claws are removed luvlylady because of the position of them. If the nail grows too long it can curl over and start growing inwards, very painful, plus they can be ripped of if caught on something.

This dew claw thing is totally new to me
In Finland NOBODY removes dew claws. And nobody finds this a problem either.

Maybe Cocker owners in Finland are much better at grooming their dogs  I trimmed a pet Cocker last week whose dew claw nails had grown so long, one was embedded in the skin!! Believe me this is not nice for the dog!

Yes, I totally agree it's not nice to the dog :(. I clip the nails of my dogs atleast once a week, and I also tell the people whose dogs I groom to do so. Of course all people don't, so I do agree that it would probably be better at some cases that there would be no  dew claws. But then again it would be much better for some people that their dogs had no coat either (some dogs I groom come in full of knots and a really matted coat   ) ..
