Yeast Infection ?
« on: April 28, 2015, 08:11:55 AM »
Hi my 3 year old locker has a few dry scabs on his tail and around the base of his tail and it biting at the area all the time and been scratching for the last 24 hours - he has also developed a pungent smell

I've searched the net and have found possibly a yeast infection - can I treat this ? best foods to avoid ?

Thanks everyone in advance

You don't think his anal glands need emptying do you & that's why he's chewing?

What is the cause of the dry scabbing on the tail and base of his tail - if that were the case ?

My first thought was anal glands because of the location where he's biting and the smell. If he were mine I'd have him checked by a vet if it's irritating him that much and you don't know the cause :D

The only way to find out for sure what's causing it is a quick trip to the vets. They can rule out anal glands and conform any infection if there is one. Archie had an itchy episode last year and he licked and nibbled himself sore, which then got infected. We didn't really get to the bottom of the initial cause of the itch - some sort of allergy most likely - but he needed cream and anti-biotics to sort the sore patches.

I have to agree that a trip to the vets would be best. They'll be able to identify the problem and start treatment straight away.

In the meantime you could try bathing the area with dilute (1:10) Hibiscrub to give a bit of relief but a proper diagnosis by a vet after seeing the problem is much better than advice found on the internet or even any general advice given on here.

I agree with the others, a trip to the vets may be in order
