My boy Charlie has IVDD. He went down paralyzed in his rear about 18 months ago when he was 7y/o. We knew absolutely nothing then about IVDD and that cockers were pre-disposed to it. It is not mentioned on the KC site against the breed, but if you do a yahoo for IiVDD you will find that cockers are mentioned. However our boy went to the Glasgow Vet University for spinal surgery and after that and much physio etc he got up 3 weeks later and is mobile again. He is not allowed onto the furniture as jumping down again could cause another disk to explode. Also he doesnt do stairs either so we built a ramp to take him out into the garden. He hasnt recovered 100% he has the strength back in his rear end but with the spinal damage and surgery he hasnt the neurology back in his legs so staggers about a bit.
Crate rest is very important when they have back issues. What would I have done if surgery had been successful and he didnt regain his mobility. I would have bought him a cart of course. Plenty of disabled dogs live fulfilling happy energetic lives.
I hope buddy get well soon
