William has eaten a peach stone - is that dangerous?
« on: June 19, 2008, 09:18:29 PM »
About 8 hours ago William found a discarded peach stone, still with a bit of peach attached to it, and swallowed it whole before anyone had the chance to take it from him. He was at my friend's house for the day and I've only just collected him and found out about it.

Does anyone know if peaches are safe for dogs to eat, or if peach stones can cause a blockage or anything?

So far so good. He's done a perfectly normal looking poo this evening, hasn't been sick and seems perfectly OK. But I'm a bit worried as I would imagine a peach stone would be quite hard to digest.

Has anyone had a similar experience with their Cocker?

Def worth calling the vets then, although I wouldnt panic as if the chart is right its not listed as very toxic, not even a green band one.  Fingers crossed for you though I hope he will be ok.

let us know what the vet says

you need a fair quantity of pips for them to be toxic - more than the occasional core  ;)

My Rosie loved apple cores - used to pinch apples etc off the rabbit!  :005:

I agree with livercake...and even if it is toxic that doesnt neccessarily mean anything majorly harmful.  It might mean one funny poop or something. Not that we dont all have to be careful but you get my gist  ::)

Thanks for the advice everyone. I phoned my vet and although the peach stone won't poison him it could get stuck and cause a blockage. I have to watch out over the next couple of days and take him to the vet if he vomits or becomes lethargic. If so, they'll have to x-ray him to see what's going on.
The vet said it may well pass through without causing any problem and she would be more concerned if he was a very small dog.
So fingers crossed that he'll just pass it through. I think I'm in for an anxious couple of days though unless/until I see evidence of it passing through normally.

It can be very worrying. My saffy swallowed a peach stone and it did cause a blockage and had to be removed. Fingers crossed for you and william

No sign of it yet. I've examined both poos that he's done this morning (apologies to anyone eating) and he definitely hasn't passed it. He's his usual happy self, eating and running round as normal, so hopefully it's on the way through but a bit slowly.
I didn't get much sleep last night though, kept waking up and worrying about him.
I'm feeding and exercising him as normal in the hope that helps to push it through and he certainly enjoyed his New Forest walk this morning.

Come on William, you can do it.
I hope this stone makes an appearance some time today and then you can stop worrying Elaine.
