Bad news for my Doyle
« on: July 08, 2009, 06:25:51 PM »
Took Doyle to the vets today as he was holding his leg up after chasing his ball, and vet says he has a slipped knee, and will need an operation, but wants to leave it a few months and have a look at it then, feel so sorry for him,  :'( :'( he lives to chase his ball and now he needs to stay on his lead and stay as calm as possible which is just impossible considering he is an 18month old working cocker and has his brother to contend with, I can only hope the operation will mean he can chase his ball again when he has recovered

I also really wish I had chosen a pet insurance when I was looking 2 days ago, just know this is going to be expensive, lesson learned, if you see a good deal just get it dont wait to see if you can save a few more pennies!!!!!

I'm really sorry to hear that, poor Doyle :'(  Rodaidh had a luxating patella and had the surgery last year; he was operated on about 3 weeks after it was diagnosed but there are 'levels' of LP and it could be that Doyle's isn't so severe so they want to monitor him first. Keeping him still and quiet for 2 months afterwards was not fun (he was crated 24/7 other than being carried out to the toilet) but he adjusted very well and we got through it and he hasn't looked back since. He made a full recovery with no ongoing problems at all, he was able to resume his working training when his crate rest finished and he was out on shoots 5 months later. If you haven't already I would ask for a referral to a specialist orthopaedic vet, the surgeon who did Ro's operation was about a 90 minute drive away from us but he was amazing and I'd recommend him to anyone, Ro's operation was a complete success. I'm sorry that you don't have insurance, it's not a cheap operation :-\  but the vet may let you pay it off in instalments if that would make it easier for you.

This is Rodaidh's thread which covers pretty much the whole thing from diagnosis through to surgery and recovery, it's pretty long so you may want to wait until you have some time on your hands to read it!

I also hope there is a way you can pay it up, if you can't, could you put it on a credit card maybe?

Hi Everyone

Just thought i'd update you all on my baby Doyle!!

He had his operation just over a month ago, he's had 2 pins put in his leg, and was not a very happy bunny after his operation as you can see  :'( :'(

And he definitely did not like having his collar on, which might I add was useless as he just hooked it under his leg and licked away at his stitches no matter what size collar we used, the little b*****!!! ::) ::)

but he's running round like nothing has happened now (but don't tell the vet that, he's supposed to be taking it easy) which I have decided is just not possible for a 19 month old working cocker, he is taking it allot easier that usuall, but I still don't think that would be the kind of taking it easy the vet means, the only problem I have now is that when they took his pot off he was left with a big sore on the front of his hock from the dressing, which he just has to lick until it's red raw, we have had it bandaged up for weeks as that is the only way we can stop him licking it, but now he has a sore from the bandage, I have looked everywhere for something to cover his back leg, but couldn't find anything, so have resigned myself to putting jogging pants on him, which he absolutely loves, and I must admit he does look pretty cute in them!! :005: :005:

Oh No - just when I have thrown the children off the computer they're back to see what I'm laughing at. I just LOVE his joggy bottoms - he must be really good if he's keeping them on!! Hope the operation has gone well.

Please please please listen to your vets advice re your dog resting - you could permanently damage his leg and ruin him for the future by being 'kind' and letting him over do it - I know it's so hard to do but for his long term health he really DOES need to take it easy  :-\

Dont worry, I'd never let him go over the top, as much as he'd like to, I know what could happen if he does, he is being really good, the only time we have problems is when me or my OH come home cos he gets so excited but we are managing to keep him from going mad like usuall, we are very lucky that we never have to leave him on his own as he goes to my parents when we are out at work so he always has someone to watch over him to make sure he is takinh it easy, he just has soo much energy to burn, though he's getting slightly better now as the vet has allowed 3 x 25 minute walks a day now, he's still on a short lead, but it's a damn sight better that 3 x 10 minute walks a day!!
