Eye sight problems possible
« on: October 10, 2010, 10:05:51 AM »
Hi
2 1/2 years ago our cocker had lung worm disease, was very ill and nearly died a few times. We were warned it was fairly likely he would have corneal scarring but all seemed well and he appeared to make a full recovery - had a final check up to confirm all well.

However, occasionally I have noticed there seems to be a problem. Mainly when he is walked alone. We lost our other dog a few days ago and as he's walked alone now it's more apparent so much so my mother noticed it too.

He is well trained and behaves very well. Stays close to us, comes when called etc, doesnt run up to people, says hello to other dogs although not always.

If he is ahead of me sometimes he seems to panic as if he doesnt see where we are and runs ahead as if looking for us and keeps on going. Eventually I will get his attention and he comes running back. He's not running to see someone or another dog just running as if he's lost us although we are very close.

Yesterday we did a little test where my mother put him on the lead and walked away with him from me. She let him off and he came running to find me. He was in eyesight distance of me at all times but ran straight past me only stopping when I called his name. He then turned his head, saw me and came running.

COuld this be some sort of tunnel vision? His eyes dont hurt.

Firstly, just want to say I'm so sorry for the loss of your dog & send you big :bigarmhug:'s

Have you had a referral to an ophthalmologist at all? - vets are OK with eyes but no experts. If you haven't, that would be my advice, at least then you would know for sure, if there was a problem or whether it could be something else.
My girl Purdey had Lungworm last year that was misdiagnosed for over 8 months & we nearly lost her too - she's fighting fit now though & doing really well  :luv:  (she has some lung & heart damage but eye damage was never mentioned & she doesn't appear to have problems there........I hope  )
Let us know how you get on  ;)

It could be catarracts and maybe nothing to do with previous illnesses.

As Lindsayp suggests it may be worth having him referred to a specialist.

Sorry that you've just lost your other dog.

I agree with others he needs an ophthalmology referral to see what the state of his eyes are and get a thorough examination.

Dylan  developed cataracts this last year.   We found he could not find his ball when we had thrown it for him  when it went to the left or right and also his eyes developed a red glow to them.

I suggest you get him to your vets as soon as possible and get a refferal to see a specialist.
