Poss eye infection
« on: January 07, 2011, 09:49:22 PM »
I took the girls to the groomers today and (probably because I didn't tell her not to) she shaved their eye lashes  >:(

Mali's eyes have now become bright red and are clearly bothering her as she keeps trying to rub them. I'm assuming that she has some hair or infection in her eyes and I will be taking her to the vet first thing in the morning but is there anything I can do to make her feel more comfortable overnight? She's feeling very sorry for herself at the moment and can hardly open her eyes.

Bathe her eyes with cool boiled salt water until you can get her to the vets

Have you got a small syringe that you can use to gently irrigate the eyes with tepid water (boiled then cooled).

Hopefully she will be more comfortable by tomorrow morning, poor girl :'(

I'm no expert but would rather be inclined to use just plain cooled boiled water or cold tea (no milk  ;) ) to bathe eyes.
If they are sore, salt could possibly aggravate it further  :dunno:
It maybe just the upset/irritation of having her fur trimmed around her face/eyes that has that has caused a temporary reaction but think your right to get it checked out if it does persist  ;)

Def try cold tea - my mum swore by it and I have always used it for people, dogs and cats with eye problems! Always worked for us!  Good luck.

Thanks, I've bathed them with tepid water, she sat very patiently for me to do it  :luv:

She's curled up in her bed now so I'll see how she copes for the rest of the evening and will give the tea a go next time. Thank you

Before rushing to the vets, get some Viscotears from the chemist and give her a little of that - they are artificial tears. This will help wash and soothe the eye and may save you a vet's visit.

Personally with eyes you can't wait really as any eye problems should be considered more of an emergency than other areas so I would go to vets who will prescribe whatever is needed.

She is back to normal today thank you. The eye wash seemed to work, all the redness has gone and she has stopped trying to rub them. I think it was more of an irritation than an infection. I'll be sure to tell them to leave their eyes alone next time they go to the groomer  ;)

Thanks for your help
