Lip Fold Eczema
« on: November 28, 2012, 10:24:05 PM »
Has anyone any suggestions on treatment for lip fold eczema.  Jazz seems to have a problem the last few days.  He has been doing dives and rubbing the sides of his mouth on the carpet.  When I tidied his face with the clippers today I could see he has the start of lip fold eczema.  Obviously I will take him to the vet but I wondered if anyone could recommend a medication that has actually worked, or something I could use in the meantime.  I know this is a problem with Cockers, Jazz is my fourth Cocker, but I have not really had great success in treating it in the past.  Is this a condition which develops as dog gets older, Jazz is now seven and my previous dog did nsot have any problems until later life.

Flamazine cream is really good for this, you can get it online from Monster pets.
Keep the hair clipped short around the folds, clean with damp cotton wool and most importantly try to keep the folds dry. I have had dogs with awful lip fold problems and Flamazine is brilliant, it is used in humans for burns. I dry my dogs mouth with kitchen roll after drinking and eating.

If you do try this, I would get the tube rather than the pot, then you are not contaminating it with your fingers. :D

When I looked in the past I was sure you needed a prescription for flamazine
Might get a small tub to keep in - thanks Julie

One of mine suffers from it occasionally, but it's much better when the hair is kept short.
I have used vagisil wipes & then put a bit of thornit powder on too, which helps dry it out.

I also tried diluted hydrogen peroxide in the past (can't recall the %) but that worked quite well too

Diluted hibiscrub didn't make much difference

You don't need a prescription to get it from monster pets  ;), I just bought 2 tubes.
It was I thought prescription only, this is the only place I have found where you can buy it. It is exactly the same as the stuff I got from the specialist. You can order it through your vets but will probably be a lot more money.

I'm about to try benzoyl peroxide cream. This is sold for acne treatment, and is available over the counter, but is recommended for lip fold pyoderma in the Merck veterinary manual. I've no idea how effective it will be yet but I'll give it a go until I decide it's getting too bad and go to the vet's for Fuciderm.

Just had a look on Monster, they are now asking for a prescription, they must have made a mistake when I got mine as I know others who got without the prescription. You can ask your vet to get it for you.

   :bigarmhug:

Thanks so much for all your advice.  I do keep the area around Jazz's mouth clipped very short and wipe his face regularly after he has had a drink.  I just feel slightly concerned when applying something to the mouth area as obviously there is a good chance he could lick some of it off.

Its just great to have this resource if you have any concerns about your Cocker.

I may be wrong, but it looks like you may be able to buy Flamazine without prescription at drugs4pets

That's wonderful Max - I have ordered some this morning.  Many thanks for all your efforts.  Hopefully I should have a less itchy Jazz very soon.

I did wonder if maybe you'd get so far with the order & they'd ask for a prescription.  I think I may order some too
