Worming
« on: January 03, 2013, 07:29:41 PM »
Can anyone advise on which wormers are the best both for the dog & for gettiing rid of worms?

I've wormed Molly (5.5 months) twice with Drontal Plus & both times it seems to have upset her stomach.  She hasn't actually been sick but she will not sleep & whined all the time like she was uncomfortable during the night after she'd had the tablet.

Obviously it doesn't agree with her but I wondered if members could recommend alternatives.  Also are the spot-on treatments as effective as the tablets as Molly also had Advocate once before the Drontal but we found a worm in her bed (dead I might add) so the vet recommended I used Drontal.

Thank you all for your replies. Another question, why is Milbemax "prescription only" at the online pet medication stores yet I can but Drontal without?

Anyone know?

Riley has always been fine with drontal, he has the bone shaped tablet every three months. Costs under £2 for one tablet.

It's a shame it upsets Molly's stomach Jane, they're not expensive & are really easy to get down them.  My other dog, Paige, is fine on them so I'll probably leave her on them but have to try Milbemax for Molly.  I'm just concerned that, because I have to get them from the vet they will cost 3 times as much as they do online.

Most of the more effective meds are prescription only - same as with human drugs  ;)  It is the same with flea treatments - Frontline you can get over the counter but Frontline Combo (which is the one that actually works) is prescription only.  You can ask your vet for a prescription (they may charge) if you want to buy it online.

I just buy mine from the vet - I only worm Coco every three months so it really does not work out that expensive  ;)
