I'm sure Fucithalmic is a POM.

Charley has kerratoconjunctivitis sicca - basically dry eye - and is on permanent medication.  I wasn't able to purchase Fucithalmic without a prescription.  Has it been changed recently?

I have been using Optrex Infected Eyes for him and it has been fine.

but for dry eye you should just be using false tears, not an antibiotic eye ointment.

Isn't it "Optimune" for dry eye

Good point Lisa tsk I hate it when I get something wrong  >:(- it depends really - on what stage the dry eye is at  - some dogs only need false tears, some need Optimune as well, sometimes you can do Optimune every other day, and false tears every day. It's a question of what suits the dog.

Optimmune did not work for Charley.  Indeed, no percentage of cyclosporine was any use.  All it did was cause irritation.  I had him referred to eye specialists in Manchester where every conceivable test and treatment was tried.  It cost the insurance company almost £1,000 for the first year.  Fortunately, he was prescribed Fradexam by a French vet and it worked miracles.  He no longer gets kerratitis. This is not available in the UK so I have to stock up with it when I'm away.   He also has Fucithalmic, Chloramphenicol and Viscotears.

As he has almost no tear function he is susceptible to eye infections, therefore Charley has a whole stack of medication not just antibiotic ointment and drops.

Probly shouldn't be vaccinating a dog with an auto immune disease - just thought I ought to point that out... :-\

Have to say from personal experience vets don't know everything, all the time ;) Mine prescribed Optimune to one of my dogs for hayfever ::) ::) needless to say he didn't need that! So I took advice from someone else and what do you know not only is Milos hayfever ten times better but I'm not spending all that money on Optimune every 6 weeks

Penel has a great deal of knowledge about auto immmune disease btw if she was going on Mastermind it could probably be one of her specialist subjects :005: ;)

Fortunately, my experience of vets is a whole lot better than that.   :005:

I can't understand why an opthalmic medication such as Optimmune would be prescribed for hay fever. :005:

Well they'd tried everything else   and nothing worked, mind you optimune REALLY didn't work! thankfully piriton and keeping the eyes very very clean with tea bags does  much cheaper too :005:

no need to make the grumpy face  :005: I was just pointing out that dogs with auto immune diseases should not be vaccinated. Ask the vaccine manufacturers - they'll tell you !  or even look it up on their website.  It says "only healthy dogs should be vaccinated" - a dog with dry eye (an auto immune disease) is not a healthy dog, sorry, but thats the way it is !

Can you show me the evidence that a dog with keratoconjunctivitis sicca should not be vaccinated?

You have to watch that you aren't giving it to a dog with an eye ulcer too- that's why the vet usually uses fluorescein, the orange stuff, to make sure there is no ulceration before prescribing fucithalmic.
