Worming and Flea treatment - what do you use?
« on: November 06, 2007, 09:40:51 AM »
Up until now I have been using Stronghold on both the dog and the cats every month.... it may be effective, but it's not cheap!

I am thinking of changing to drontal tablets for both, for the treatment of worms (every 3 months)... and maybe frontline spot on as a flea treatment?

What do you all use on your dogs/animals?

(edited to add, I use the respective dog and cat versions of products - not the same for both, unless it is a dual species product, e.g panacur)

I treat Jarvis if and when he has a problem, don't do 'preventative' frontlining etc

He has a real problem with Adult drontal - he was violently ill (both ends for 24 hours) - some dogs are fine on it, some aren't.  We have used Milbemax since and that was ok, but again, some dogs are fine on it, some aren't from what I read.

I know Panacur is tolerated quite well, but I don't think it covers Roundworm?  I know it doesn't cover one worm category, can't quite remember which one....  ::)

Milbemax and Frontline here.
Zak and Strider both had a problem with Drontal but have been absolutely fine with Milbemax.
Did try Advantix for the fleas and ticks but Zak had a really bad reaction so it was back to Frontline.

I use Drontal wormer ( Panacur makes Jimmy go nuts). I don't use a flea treatment... like Helen I'll use one only if the dogs actually get fleas - so far none of them ever have, thankfully.

Thanks all.. this is really useful info.

I think I am going to try Baxter on the drontal tabs (I know he had drontal as a young pup) and the cat version for the moggies and not use anything topical on them for fleas, unless there is a problem.  I routinely do the house every six months anyway.

puppy drontal was fine with Jarv too...just the adult one that caused the problem but each dog is different (and I know mine has a fairly sensitive tummy  ::) )

Me to! Mine never have flea treatment. Our dogs have only ever had them once in eleven years of having dogs, that was years ago after our Border Collie was playing in some hay bales.

I used to treat the previous cat with Frontline (she was a very outdoorsy cat, and used to sleep in the shed with the resident hedgehog!). The cat we have now is too lazy to think about going out!

I use Drontal wormer ( Panacur makes Jimmy go nuts). I don't use a flea treatment... like Helen I'll use one only if the dogs actually get fleas - so far none of them ever have, thankfully.
- Roxy (9.5wk old Working Cocker) had Panacur wormer last night and it was like she'd eaten a pot of coffee and a jar of sweets - she was bouncing off the walls!! So its interesting to hear you say that!

Drontal for worming although looking into a new natural wormer for all my animals inc the hens and rabbits. I used to use frontline for fleas and ticks but im afraid im not convinced these products are as good as they say  :-\ Hence I treat if /when ness.  ;)

We take Jagger to the vets and they put drops on his back which do both but I forget what it is called atm.  It is reasonable tho... it costs me £8 for fleaing and worming.

Molly is frontlined atm because thats what her previous owners did and we still have some left and she was given milbemax for worming
