Advice please on what this could be
« on: June 23, 2011, 08:11:53 PM »
Sorry the pictures aren't great but couldnt get the camera to focus!

Was looking at Woofies teeth earlier and found this ugly looking red growth between his gum and tooth.  What do you think it could be.

Possibly unrelated but we have a wasps nest at the back of the house at the moment and he also was carrying a hedgehog in his mouth earlier.  I honestly can't say how long it has been there as I can't remember when I last checked his teeth.

Thank you for looking

It looks like an "epulis" to me which is a benign growth...Thor has one on his tooth and unless they grow huge or cause an infection vets dont tend to remove them...

Perhaps get a vet check done just to make sure??

Will be ringing the VETs as soon as they open to get an appointment.

He is absolutely fine in himself and it isn't bothering him.  Thank you for your replies  :-*

Yes best get it checked, he may have picked up something nasty from that hedgehog, or got infection.

Don't know what the hell it is, but I'm hoping it isn't anything nasty.  Hopefully, as you say, it could be a beesting and that the redness of his gum is the inflammation and the sting.  I've never been stung by a bee or wasp (touch wood) so I don't know what a sting looks like.

Hope that Woofie is alright! ;)
Lots of love ... Lizzie

At first I couldn't get an appointment till Sunday (I wanted one after 4pm tonight or tomorrow). Had to wake OH up again second day on the trot for an animal emergency (yesterday it was a hedgehog) to get him to take Woofie to the only appointment today at 3pm.

Apparently the Vet wasn't concerned, poked and prodded it and said it was excess gum tissue. She said to keep an eye on it in case it got bigger or bled and they could remove it, but they didn't want to do that now as it wasn't bothering him.  She didn't want to do a biopsy either.

OH told her about Woofie carrying the Hedgehog around but she couldn't see any puncture wounds.

TBH I am still worrying, I wish I had been there as I never think OH asks enough questions!

Thank you for all your kind wishes xxxx

That's really good news Lisa

I understand why you're still worried though, because it's never the same getting the news secondhand. But it sounds like the vet was very positive about it being harmless and I'm sure that she would have wanted to do a biopsy if she had any doubts.

If you're still worried after the weekend you could phone the surgery and ask them to get the vet to phone you when she's free to talk it through with you.
