I would definitely be soaking a teething puppy's food.  During teething I remember that Jarvis could cope far more easily with wet foods like naturediet than his kibble - they can go right off any food though as often teething gives them tummy trouble as well.

Frozen carrots or a teatowel soaked and frozen make good gum soothers  :D

I tried the teething gel for Roxy and it was very good. She seemed to like the taste of it so she let me put it on. Hope it brings some relief to the teething pupsters xx

Well, Ozzy is much more his normal self today, and has started to tentatively chew stuff again.  He really likes his frozen tea-towel, but I think I'll not use the frozen carrots as a friend of mine gave them to her teething pup and they gave her terrible diarrhoea, so we'll try and manage without them.  He's still a bit sleepy, but nowhere near as much as yesterday.

His left eye still looks horrible and gunky, but the swelling seems to be a bit reduced and it's not proving too difficult to get the eye drops in - OH just holds him close to his chest so he can't wriggle too much, then I just sneak up and pop them in.  It's working so far, but when he gets back into full cockerdile mode I'll probably have to put those huge gloves on that they use when training police dogs to grab criminals! :005:

So, if he continues to be ok I think it's all systems go for his first training class tonight - even if he's still a bit off colour, it won't matter if he doesn't do very well, it will have given him the experience so he'll know what to expect next week.  I have to admit that I'm looking forward to it.  We have to take a stuffed Kong with us to keep him occupied while the other pups get individual attention.  I've never stuffed a Kong before, and he's never had one, so wish us both luck with it

Sorry to hear about Ozzy's teeth, poor little mite. Amber has had problems with her front teeth - they started to get rotten and loose so we had them fixed. We only expected two or three to be taken out but the vet actually removed 9!! She only has a single lower incisor now so we have nicknamed her Juanita (one eater)!! :005:
By the by, you mentioned the bulging eye I immediately thought it might be something Ellie (now long departed) had years ago. She had exactly the same thing happen to her and had to see a specialist. Turns out it was an abcess which required draining by way of a huge needle inserted through her upper gum behing her back molars. (Goodness, still makes me feel queezy thinking about it even now! :fear2:). Thankfully it was done under a general anaesthetic and cleared it up straight away.
Anyway, hopefully Ozzy will be right as rain soon too. :-*

Oh heck - I hope the eye thing isn't what your Ellie had   :020:  Hopefully the drops and anti-inflammatories will clear it up!

Glad Ozzy's feeling a bit more himself today. Hope the eye thing doesn't involve big needles through gums  :fear2:

I took Henry to the vet today - worried he's got a urinary tract infection - bit pointless visit really as I didn't have a urine sample. Oh well, he seems a lot better today anyway, so hopefully it's sorted itself out naturally. Have the means to collect a sample for the vet if it continues (weeing quite frequently over the last couple of days and a couple of accidents inside - bang goes his amazing bladder control!).

Good luck with the class tonight - no wonder you're excited - I loved mine! It was so cute (and interesting too) seeing 14 other puppies of different breeds and slightly different ages (obviously mine was by the far the cutest puppy  :luv:). No other cockers, although a couple of cockerpoos which do have some similarities. I'm sure Ozzy will be fine with a stuffed kong, although the first time I gave Henry one stuffed with kibble, a) they fell out and b) he couldn't work out how to get them out. Using salmon mousse and freezing it now (although only given him a couple when going out for 10 minutes!).

Obviously Henry was the cutest - that goes without saying! :luv: :005:

Only 7 puppies in our class so that's good.  They ask you to stuff the Kong with something soft, so going to use Nature Diet, with a few bits of kibble mixed in, should be ok, I hope!!!  Going to keep the Kong purely for the classes, so it's a special treat for him.  BTW, the Dogs Trust video worked a treat for teaching him the 'down' command - he picked it up really quickly, now whenever he sees me at 'his' cupboard, he lays down just in case he gets a treat - it's so cute!!! :luv:  I haven't tried any of the others yet as I didn't want to confuse him if they teach things a different way in class, but I'll definitely try the 'paw' one!

Hope Henry is better soon and you don't have to be syphoning up any of his 'accidents' to take to the vets to be tested.  I'm sure he'll regain control once he's stopped teething - it seems to affect them all in so many different ways!  Ozzy is now back to normal cockerdile biting and chewing, so I think his mouth feels better!

I'm soaking his food now, but not letting it get totally soft as he doesn't seem to like it when it's too mushy, and he seems to be managing it better.  Don't think I'll have to do it for long as he's back to his cockerdile ways again today!

Re: Teething? or something else? - ......UPDATE and Relapse!!!
« Reply #26 on: September 15, 2012, 12:52:05 PM »
Well, after having a manic day yesterday, obviously feeling better, Ozzy is back to being lethargic and miserable today!  His mouth seems to be very sore again - he won't play with anything and all he wants to do is sleep. He rallied briefly when I took him for a walk and he played with his pal - blue roan Kevin, but flopped again as soon as we got home.  I suspect that he did too much chewing yesterday and has made his mouth sore again, and training class last night probably didn't help, chewing on a stuffed Kong while we had a talk about the course.  Didn't do much actual training, just a short exercise to train the pups to pay attention, so spent a long time getting a bit over-excited with the Kong, and also seeing all the other puppies.  I'm trying not to worry too much today, and just leave him to sleep, and hopfully he will be better again tomorrow.  His eye is still a bit swollen, but not a gunky - continuing to put the drops in 3 times a day.

Yes, he's eating fine, I'm wetting his food and he seems to be managing well.  I think he's just exhausted - he got very over-excited at training last night!

Oh yes, how did the training go? What did you learn?
