Thanks everybody, for your support. I'm afraid the news is not good. We had a call from the vets about 1 o'clock explaining that the pressure in Ozzy's eye was very raised and causing concern, and they needed to find out the cause. She wanted to refer him to the Willows, the vet hospital in Sollihull, and he needed to be seen today. As we had to travel an appointment was made for 4 o'clock, so we collected Ozzy and set off. The Ophthalmic specialist is a lovely German lady called Christine. She examined him and took him off for an ultrasound. The upshot of it all is that he has a foreign body which has penetrated the back of his eye, possibly having entered through his soft palate, or from the front and under his 3rd eyelid. She showed us the scans of Ozzy's eye and a healthy eye so we could compare - Ozzy's looked like a war zone compared to the healthy one. His retina was already mostly detached, and it was full of infection, gunk and debris. Needless to say, they have kept him in. She's going to give him very strong antibiotics and painkillers overnight, and re-asses him in the morning, but the chances of saving his eye are almost nil. She will then decide whether to remove his eye or not, and it will probably be done tomorrow morning. We have just got back home.
We are obviously devastated by this news - she says it's very unlucky that it happened when he was so small, and the foreign body was probably already doing it's damage several days before he showed any symptoms, so there was nothing further that we could have done. There is one bright spot which we are grateful for - at least it isn't glaucoma. If it had been he would have lost his eye anyway, and the other would have been at risk within a couple of years.
We will comes to terms with it, I'm sure - we do know that dogs manage perfectly well with one eye (or even no eyes, come to that), but at the moment it's just heartbreaking that our gorgeous Ozzy will only have one eye for the rest of his life.
Our baby has been a very brave boy, hardly flinching during the examinations, but obviously in a lot of pain. Hopefully before too long he will feel better.
I'll update again tomorrow, when we know what is happening.
