Title: Wilf's platelets are dropping again *Sad Update*
Post by: PennyB on January 08, 2016, 02:28:37 AM
Wilf isn't well - his demeanour is OK but things like his breathing isn't brilliant and he's struggling to walk far.

Initially we thought his heart murmur may be needed tablets now but both my vet and I felt there was something else, so before she prescribed anything she checked his bloods but while their blood machine only spewed out 2 results it suggested his platelets were low. Another blood test was taken while I was there (he's such a good boy as he didn't mind at all) and were sent off - bloods back tomorrow

No signs of any infection at all so am hoping we've missed something and it is still just IMTP again - he had an episode 2 years ago - and not something else like lymphoma

So so fed up - I lost Ruby last year then Ollie my cat 2 days before Christmas, Wilf & Stella had gastro bug over christmas that needed vet treatment, Lady's hip is out, Stella has a fatty lump that my vet feels may need removing as its growing into the muscle and Bosley needed a cataract op last year even though he's only 2 - its not as if I need any more bad luck

True Wilf is 12 so getting older but so so sad at the prospect of losing him so soon (the treatment for the IMTP could also kill him but at least he has a better chance with that than lymphoma) - he's been my 'laughing boy' (he always looks as if he is anyway) for as long as I can remember

My vet put him on steroids tonight as I was worried last night he might collapse

Sorry to hear that Penny :bigarmhug:

I hope the steroids help Wilf to feel better until you find out for sure what's going on, and that when you get a full diagnosis it's a good one xx

Where's Stella's fatty lump? William, who's 11, had a golf ball sized one removed a few months ago. It was next to his penis and growing rapidly so I opted to have it removed before it started interfering with his waterworks and while the surgery was still straightforward. Quite a big wound and several stitches but it healed up really well.

Fingers crossed for Wilf, hope its nothing too serious and that the steroids will help. :bigarmhug:

Stella's is right above her elbow but my vet felt that it was growing in rather than out and she's worried it will merge with too much muscle - we're keeping an eye on it for now. We did remove one from Ruby years ago as hers was just below the base of her tail.

Its awful to see Wilf at the moment - he's slumped on the floor as he couldn't be bothered moving after he'd had a drink of water but at least he was eager to have some hills wet food earlier as he doesn't want to chew anything.

Last time he was peeing pure blood but we can't find any indicators (bleeding) at the moment.

While I don't really want to go to Bristol again with him am hoping they can give my vet a head start at least

Vets to get back to me re blood panel and more or less confirms what they suggested yesterday but they still need to track someone down at Langford (his previous clinician is no longer there as they've discovered so are waiting back for a call and will call again during afternoon to give them a nudge) - Wilf is pitiful though as he's panting all the time and his respiration rate not good either. She says the bloods come back with biochem but also there's a new marker for kidney disease and she's unsure re this as his creatinine etc. are all within normal levels even though they suggest a smigeon of it

Its going to be a long weekend I feel (particularly as he seems worse at night) - so sad to see this happy chappy who can barely wag his tail or give me his usual toothy grin

Really sorry to hear about Wilf and wish him all that's well and helpful... but also all the others. You seem to have been royally smitten with bad stuff at the moment. I think only those whose lives are closely enmeshed (and given meaning) by the love of animals can understand the pain.

Langford have said they can't say its IMTP 100% as his platelets are that low to be critical - so could be or could be something else - so more bloods on Monday and a urine test then may be see how his platelets are then. I ended up crying on phone when i spoke to vets as I felt so weary

I am so sorry Wilf is poorly, my heart goes out to you.  Hope with all my heart that Wilf improves over the weekend and the results are better on Monday.

Thinking of you both.

Just had to take him down to my vets as an emergency just before they closed to see if he should be transferred to their emergency service. His belly had become swollen over past 3 hours so I was concerned re how urgent it was - he has fluid on his belly so for now has been given a diuretic jab and hope it shifts it overnight but have an appointment to see the other vet tomorrow at my practice

Title: Re: Wilf's platelets are dropping again

Bit better in sense the fluid went down a little - well compared to how much it filled up last night at midnight as it was much more than when I saw my vet - he was like a walking barrel then - we both had a reasonable night's sleep (good job my sofa is a long one) even though while I watched late night TV at one point I kept checking he was still breathing though. Will see what my other vet says this morning when I see him at 10.20 (haven't fed Wilf but he still has a good appetite which is good). Today is another day I guess

Title: Re: Wilf's platelets are dropping again

Not positive really and am preparing myself for worst - vet put him on heart meds at low dose, including diuretics and Wilf was quite waggy in vets, ate his breakfast when we came home and even looked wistfully about wanting a walk but he's gone down again an when I wanted to give him a tablet he's turned his nose up at the tiny amount of food I gave him. If he stops eating and drinking then its time am afraid. Was feeling positive when I left vets despite my vets saying he's too far gone to come fully back. My heart is breaking already - Wilf has always been the special one.

Despite Wilf & Ruby's health problems over the years I'd do it all again with them in a heartbeat.

Nearly seven months and I'm still in that place, Penny. But they're worth grieving for, worth whatever the price. It's just sometimes you're left feeling bankrupt. I'm glad you can find something to smile over now and again because all they ever want to do is please....so still working for you.

was so much easier with Ruby who died a year ago now, as there was a year of quality of life/grieving going on but while she was there rather than after but not as despairing as I feel now for Wilf - she had a very visible tumour so I took it a day at a time but she had a great time and was still wagging in the vets and had eaten a tin of butchers food already that day (her tumour was about to burst but she wasn't ready in her head but quality of life meant in her case anyway a little sooner than too late) - this meant her passing felt complete - with Wilf I've gone through all that anger and guilt and am numb again - he leaves a massive hole despite the fact I have 3 others, but he was also the comedian of the pack, all confident and norty

I lost Marti aged 12 and a 22 yr old cat a year ago, and was sad but ok. , but losing my 8 yr old Bob has ripped me up.  That was last July. I  couldn't  look at a cocker for months. Recently I have cuddled a roan and a golden ,  but black ones like him , just no. I'm leaky eyed even writing about it now. They become part of you , don't they.
I never thought it could be so bad, so like the others,  I'm with you in the bad place, and I suppose we are all completely daft.  I have a Rescue dog i have  grown to love , as she has learnt to live with and love me. But nothing beats that cocker with his x- Ray eyes into my soul, and I am sure it is the same for you.

"The x-ray eyes into the soul?"

That's it exactly. No one is ever prepared for the nature of the grief when you lose it. I've had so many losses but still never known anything like this one. I suppose we don't really understand the strength and depth of any particular bond- until it's cut.

Can't look at cockers without pain. Can't look at working cockers without tears. Can't look at red working cockers without wanting to howl.

To everyone in this situation all I can say is it was worth it and I wouldn't change a thing, and I suspect neither would any of you- except for the present. So very sorry for you all.

With Wilf it was the comedian in him I loved and his wiggly bum and cuddles, & his nortiness plus he was practically with me 24/7 for almost 13 years bar the odd week when I was away but I was away very rarely - I also think I never got that chance as I did with Roobs to get used to him dying as it happened so suddenly. Ollie my 9 year old cat died 3 weeks before Wilf did and we knew it was his time as he had a tumour so it was the best thing particularly as my vet and I had tried so hard till then (before we discovered the tumour) to make sure he got the best treatment so it felt right and yes I cried and I still miss that cuddly lump of a cat but I have no regrets
