Hi all
Few questions from relatively wise cokcer spaniel owners
We have had 2 cockers now, one female (passed away) and a 1 year old male Golden called Ben. Ben has full pedigree and a lovely temperement.
We are keen to have a pup from him to keep, but in breeding terms are not experienced.
We have a few questions
1) we would like to have Ben Hip/Eye Scored, can our local vet do this? Is their any certificate we need?
2) would any experienced cocker breeders take Ben in and help with the breeding, or do we need more experience ourselves
3) is Ben old enough at 1, is there any ideal age. He notices female dogs often!!! :005:

How well is he achieved in the show ring? Reputable bitch owners would only consider him if he is successful and has something special to pass on to future generations ;)
I am sure some of the more experienced owners who you meet at shows can explain how the Optigen, PRA and hip-scoring testing works, but afaik, some of the tests need to be done by a specialist vet :D
Have you read the link that Jane posted for you? (http://www.cockersonline.co.uk/discuss/index.php?topic=3420.0) There are lots of things to consider when you breed, including the fact that your boys personality may change......if you want another puppy like him, why not go back to his breeder, or find a litter with similar ancestory to Ben ? ;)

I don't understand if you want somebody else to use your dog at stud or if you want to breed a litter yourself. I assume the 1st if you only have a boy and no girls.
There is nothing saying anybody would want to use your boy at stud. I don't mean to sound harsh but in the 'show world' if somebody likes the lines behind your dog and thinks your dog is a good representative of the breed then they may ask to use your dog at stud.
Also you cannot guarentee that your boy will be able to succesfully mate a bitch. ;)
Have you checked to see if there are any breeding restrictions on his pedigree. If his pedigree is endorsed then that will mean you cannot register any puppies he sires with the Kennel Club. ;)
Would't it be easier to buy another puppy with all the relevant health checks rather than trying to breed one?

I can only agree with what Rachel (IWLass) and Chelsea says, and add that sometimes its best just to enjoy your dog as a pet

I agree with what has been said. Since I have had Coco I have learned a lot and have deffo come to the conclusion that breeding is best left to the experts ;) If you want another pup, why don't you go back to Ben's breeder?
