Title: Charlie-spud - Hip Dysplasia
Post by: T on November 10, 2004, 09:47:43 PM
After thorough examinations and x-rays Charlie-Spud has been diagnosed with severe HD in his rear right leg and secondary HD in the rear left.   :(

His Vet and Consultant have put a plan of action together for Charlie, which involves a strict exercise regime including hydrotherapy.  He has been restricted to 3 lead walks of a maximum 15/20 mins per day and hydrotherapy comprising 3 sessions this week increasing to 4 next week and five the week after. He has been prescribed painkillers and anti-inflammatory tablets and joint supplements. At the moment we are trying to stabilise his left hip in the hope that this will not require any surgery. However, Charlie will require surgery on his rear right hip but we hope the management plan will alleviate the need to operate on his left one.

Although Charlie is not overweight he needs to loose between 1.5 and 2.0kg. The lighter he is the better So in an attempt to help him along his groomer has given him a close cut (Hey, every little bit helps even if it is a matter of ounces :) ) Seriously though this was also recommended by the Consultant as it alleviates any pulling or agitating him around the rear or on his back.

Charlie's consultant is brilliant, she has explained everything in so much detail and appears to have won him over so much so that she can do almost anything to him, which is so reassuring especially as he tends to be slightly grummbly when anyone goes near his rear end.

The consultant also said that Charlie will need pain killing injections twice weekly towards the end of the year as his body will get used to the metacam and the pain level may over ride the effects of this drug. They cannot operate at this stage as they need to monitor his left hip, as they do not want to keep knocking him out due to the effects of a GA on his heart. But obviously if they need to then they will operate on the right one in the interim and continue to monitor the left one.

Its not the best result in the world but it explains why he has been acting so out of character recently and now measures can be taken to help him through each day and to improve his quality of life for how ever long.

There are further concerns over Frisbee especially as he shares the same father. The consultant has checked him over and at this stage is not unduly worried but we are keeping a very close eye on him...just in case… but you can bet that he will be taken straight to the vet if any alarm bells start ringing.

Poor Charlie-Spud - that is awful news :(  Hope the regime he is on keeps him comfortable and he enjoys his hydrotherapy! If I remember correctly, he is a ball loving water babe like my Vegas ;)  I really hope Frisbee isn't affected - I guess all you can do is wait and see

Do keep us updated on his progress and give him a big hug from me for being such a brave boy

Hi T

:( What sad news for CS, at least you now have a treatement programme in place for him, which I am sure will go some way in helping him, he certainly has great owners that will ensure everything possible is done for him :)   Like Gill said I hope little Frisbee is not affected too.

To be honest I had no idea hip displacia was as comman as it seems to be in cockers, I always thought that it tended to affect the larger breed more?

Big hugs to all of you :)

Tina, I'm so sorry to hear such devastating news, poor Charlie Spud  :(
It does sound though, that you have a wonderful vet who by taking time to explain things and widening your understanding, has maybe made this a little bit easier on yourselves.
Fingers crossed for Frisbee, I'm sure you'll be keeping a very close watch on him  ;)
Have you let the breeder know?

Sending lots of (http://www.click-smilies.de/sammlung0304/liebe/love-smiley-024.gif) for the boys

Thanks for your replies.  I have passed on all the hugs and kisses to Charlie.  Gave a few to Frisbee as well.

Michelle - I have contacted the breeder, for what it was worth! She had to finish the phone call to answer the door. Found myself shaking my head at the receiver when finished the call. Unsure whether to cry :(  or to be angry   .  I think that this conversation over Charlie is "to be continued"

Will keep you all posted over Charlie's progress and thanks for everyones support and advice.

Oh poor Charlie-Spud  :(

I hope his treatment regime results in him feeling more comfortable very soon; and that he stabilises well.

I hope that Frisbee is given a clean bill of health soon - what a shame that you have been unable to get the support you expected from the breeder; you really don't need that stress along with worrying about your boys

Yips and bounces from Molo  - he will be gentle with Charlie, promise!

Sending big hugs & healing thoughts to Charlie spud from me (& some more hugs for little Frisbee who I'm sure isn't so little any more  :D ) & lots of Cocker snogs from Bess & Dillon.

Sorry to hear about Charlie-Spud but it at least sounds like he is going to get the very best treatment possible from your excellent vets! Hope you get more support from your breeder - I think I remember you saying Charlie-Spud came from her first litter so maybe she does not know much about HD or it just never occurred to her that problems can arise when you breed puppies?

Good luck anyway :)

Big hugs from me and Barkley (for you both and Charlie-Spud), it's completely different reading posts like these when you have met the dog and the owners.

I am so glad you have managed to get to the bottom of Charlie-Spuds problems, sounds like you have excellent support from your consultant.

We know a choc labrador with a similar condition who has to go swimming and he loves it!!

Anyway, take care and keep us posted.

Gina and Barkley xx.

I only just spotted your post about the hip dysplasia. I was so sorry to hear your troubles.   :(

My Scully was diagnosed with hip dysplasia at the age of 15 months. She had a major operation on both hips at the age of 18 months and has been on Metacam ever since. She is now nearly 8 years old.

If you want to talk about this anytime then just PM me or email me at tobycat@cwgsy.net

Sending love and hugs to Charlie-Spud. Must be a really worrying time for you, and I really hope the treatment will help. I have heard of quite a few success stories from Hydrotherapy though - I believe it can make quite a noticable difference in cases of HD. Hugs to Frisbee too - hope the wee guy is unaffected.

Charlie-Spud 'ere

I see me mom has been blarting out me troubles........well dont worry about me coz I'm feelin all the love from all my online cocker friends especially all those hugs and kisses

I have a fab vet, she grate.......she even say I should go swimmin  more often.  I luv swimmin.  I chuck myself in as soon as i get there.  I have to fetch a special toy and then swim around the pool in different directions.  The water is nice and warm.  The only problem is that I have to get out to have one of those shower things.....pah I dont like the shower.  I always wait like a good boy just long enough that me mom thinks I will stay where I am and then as she looks away  I trott off and go for another quick swim in the pool  :D Well I ask ya, why waste time waiting for the shower when I can be in the nice warm water.  Mom isnt too impressed by this   but I give her my "I'm not very well eyes!!" and everything is fine again. ;)

I'm gonna be the cleanest dog in the East Midlands once my action plan kicks in.....(I thought they said action man at first!!!!)I'm gonna have muscles like Arnie or that Rambo geeza. They already calling me GI Spud  :D I had all me hair cut off, had to have it trimmed really short but that's okay I like the smooth look as I get lots more fuss when out on walks

I gotta go for walks on lead now but thats not too bad as I am knackered after me swimmin. Dont think I could walk anymore than the 15mins sessions each time.

Anyway, I'll get me mom to keep ya all updated on me progress I gotta go now for a quick power nap.

Thanks for all your good wishes especially all the hugs and kisses.

The name's Spud......Charlie-Spud.
Woof woof woof

Allo Spud ere.....

I just been for anover swim.......it grate..... the warta so warm and clean....its grate.

I heard the woman say that you can ave as many dogs as you like in the fun swim for the same cost as one dog.  So i reckon as I not aloud to go for my long walks in the country park where I meet all my cocker online mates.  We should arrange a fun swim for all the COL doggies.

How cool wood that be.  :) yew all welcome.....yewd lub it Nell and dont worry belleee  i'll show yew how to chuck yourself in and splash around.

The only probalem is the showerey fing afterwards but the woman stops if I make lots of noise.  I make out she trying to "kill me" and me mom says i sound like a whaling bansheeeeeeee.  Cheek should hear sum of the music she listens to and then complains about the noise I make! I dont sound anyfink like that Suzey and the Banshees! he he he:P

Anyway I gotta go coz mum coming back......keep ya posted on the pool thing....me check next time how many they allow in at a time.  Imagine peoples face when they see loads of us splashing around in the pool.  :D

Gotta go, mum back.

Charlie Spud, what an excellent idea to have a Cocker meet in a pool !!!

If we could arrange it in December some time Piper would love to come.

Piper's swimming tomorrow - she loves it but no throwing herself in off the sides for my girl - she carefully walks down the steps

Have you taught Frisbee to swim yet?

Hello Charlie Spud, I'm glad you're feeling well enough to keep us updated on your progress.  Dillon & Bess have both gone to bed or they would be typing this instead, but before they went to sleep they asked me to send you lots of love & licks from both of them (well, Dillon said it was a bit soppy but if it would help you feel better, he would send licks to you).

I think the lady at the doggy swimming pool was only half serious when she said you could take your doggy friends.  I think she'd have a fit if 15 cockers (& a labrador) were to turn up with you for your next session.  It was a nice thought though

Anyway, I'm off to join Dillon & Bess in bed now, so night night Charlie Spud, sleep well & keep on getting better.

Love to little Frisbee too

I'm thinking of setting up a website relating to cockers with hip dysplasia. A lot of breeders don't think its a problem in the breed but I have come across quite a few now and am interested to compare family lines.

I wonder what anyone thinks about this idea?
Title: Charlie-spud - Hip Dysplasia
Post by: Cob-Web on November 13, 2004, 01:19:15 PM
I think it is a great idea - the more information that is available to potential cocker owners the better.

You might meet some resistance if you publish names of carrier and affected dogs; and also, it might cause worry to those owners who have already got a cocker from the affected lines unknowingly  - I remember my panic when I found out that one of Molo's ancestors (several generations back) carried PRA  :(  It took some in-depth family tree plotting to determine that he is not likely to be affected himself

On the whole, it would win my support; especially as it  will raise the profile of hip displasia amongst owners and breeders; and might lead to greater testing for this condition by breeders.

Good idea in theory if you limited it to information & advice about the condition but you would have to tread very carefully regarding publishing of details concerning pedigrees etc & would probably need to get legal advice before doing so. Some Cocker websites already contain names & pedigrees of dogs affected with hereditary conditions but only where the details are already in the public domain eg via published hip scores, eye test results, FN cases under the Cocker Club control scheme etc.

Thanks for that Jane. I hadn't thought about the legal side of it at all. I just want people to be aware that it does happen to cockers and until there is a broader range of breeders prepared to hip score their dogs then no one can know how much of a problem it really is.

I've seen my own dog suffer and I'd love to be able to prevent others from going through the same.

I appreciate your help.
