Title: Hock Height
Post by: chrisfund on January 08, 2005, 07:31:53 PM
Hello All.

It's been already 57days since our little boys and girls were born.

the weak one got much stronger. weight as much as others. a few hundred grams less though.

We evaluated our dogs tonight.  And I wonder how high should the hock be at this age?

would three fifth be enough or one third be enough ?

Or just shorter the better?

My wife and I had some argument about that topic. We decided to post that question on cockersonline.

Here goes standing position picture at the age of 57 days.

Any comments about our dogs' structural conformation would be appreciated.

Hi Chris

What a lovely litter of Puppies you have.

I'm no expert on hocks sorry but I must say I like Ocean and Funny.  It is difficult to assess them as they are all standing so differently.  I'm sure whichever ones you keep they will do you proud.

Good luck with them.

I think that the hock and angulation looks best on Ocean, although thats just my opinion.  I also like the short cobby body of Ocean. :)  They all look like they have nice heads!

I would say Ocean, but the other puppies are better marked.

All lovely puppies though  :)

I am definately no expert but my fave is Ruby...she looks smaller than the others and therefore I want to have her and feed her up and cuddle her all day long  :D

Funny has beautiful markings I think  :)

I'd say Funny has the best rear angulation of the litter, although photos can be deceiving. Ruby is also nice but maybe a bit lighter in her frame. Often straight angulation results in longer rear pasterns but I have to admit it's not something we ever measure when looking at our puppies. At this age it can be deceptive anyway - I remember someone dismissing our Rhona (who went on to great things) as being "long in the hock" when she was a baby but she wasn't at all - it was just the stage of development she was at ;)

Thank you.

Thanks all for the lovely posts.

Did you notice the weak one born with weight of 100gram is David? :P

He grew up so nice. We appreciate his efforts for surviving and her mom, sharon. She took care of him so well and lost a little bit weight and that is a good thing for her cuz she was a little bit fatty before got pregnant. :D

I'm not sure that you already know that I am living in Korea.

My wife and I are the first people who introduced blueroan cocker spaniel to Korea.

And there are only 3 english cocker spaniel breeders here in Korea.

Two of them have american type english cocker spaniels.

So I should admit that we have some difficulties establishing a certain breeding program.

This time, my wife and I decided to keep a boy and a girl.

We evaluated our litter at 8 weeks. and decided keep Ocean and Funny.

I think you have made a very good choice but that is the two that I picked  ;)

Look forward to seeing further pics when they are older.

Hi Chris

What a great looking litter of puppies, you must be so proud of them. Good to see David looking so well after the initial worries you had over him - he looks very similar to my Misty did as a pup. :)

Out of interest, what breeds are popular in Korea ?

Thank you all for the lovely compliments.

Colin, the most popular breed in korea is  American Cocker Spaniel. I can see 100~200 american cocker spaniels at  regular shows. sometimes about three hundred american cocker spaniels at a big show.

Comparing to the fact that about 600 dogs are being shown at the FCI shows in Korea, I think it's a big number.

Talking about english cocker spaniels, usually two or three dogs are being shown at one class.  :(

Whenever we go to dog shows, BOBs are always an inch away. :D

No solid colors have been shown at the shows till now. Maybe I should do something about it if I can get a chance someday.

That's really interesting, I wasn't expecting them to be the most popular. I suppose it's far easier to import dogs from the USA than Europe so presumably that explains the popularity of the American Cocker over the English. Given such a high percentage of them at shows I would guess most of the American Cockers are home bred in Korea now though ?

With people being more used to seeing the American version around they must be quite puzzled to see your Cockers out on walks. I bet you have to explain the difference on a regular basis. :D

Hi Chris,

I don't know how I missed this thread, your puppies are just gorgeous. My fave is little Ruby, she looks so pretty and sweet, but the others are beautiful too!

Chris

I'm sure the BOB's will soon come your way having taken a look at Lucky & Sharon, who I'm presuming are the proud parents of the puppies  :D  You should have some fun with them.
